If United is bailing on Asia routes, then that can't be a good sign.

They are dropping:

SFO - Nagoya
SFO - Taipei
and one of their two ORD - Tokyo flights.
 
Hardly a surprise. NGO is very weak market, many many records of trial and failure by several carriers. SFO-TPE has two airlines from Taiwan flying already. United does not own the ORD-NRT market either anymore. JAL and ANA and AA flies route. Most of the asian carriers that compete with United have reputable service to attract premium revenue. They also have brand new airplanes. Compare the economics of the B777-300ER with United's B744s that are being parked. It's a twin, but it does the same job with comparable capacity.

We've got ********************ty management that doesn't want to run an airline or do what it takes to make a route profitable but to say these routes are crown jewels is a stretch. These days when our ********************ty management cancels a route the reason is usually because they're robbing Peter o pay Paul to free up planes on other routes that they dirt bags don't have enough planes for. We cancel routes and say it's because they're weak but the real reason is because the a holes didn't plan and need to free up the planes for something else.
 
Dont forget D-Bo, there is the management pocket golden lining plan as well - more airplanes around, higher costs, less $$ for them to line their GD pockets...
 
I question any business decision of the leaders at United. Seriously, at a time when the most profitable airline has one fleet type and a simplified operation, United created more divisions with TED and comes up with the worst business plan after bankruptcy you must question why upper management is still around.
 
Just remember John Tague ran 4 previous airlines into the ground. Went from helping ATA slide into oblivion, then was hired at UAL. Guess who came with TED? You got it, good on Johnnie boy. Due to TED's great success, JT was promoted. Got to love this industry.

Imagine a pilot interview. "lets see, you crashed airplanes at 4 of your other airlines..........you are management material!"

I believe Joe Kolshack--new UAL SVP of OPS (former DAL SVP of OPS)--had a similar "stellar" record at DAL--how can these morons continue to be recycled through the airline industry?!?
 
I think there is a difference between pulling out of a market(not flying money losing routes while oil is high) and selling off the route authority for these routes. When we see UAL start to sell off Pacific route authority to other carriers(as if any can afford to buy them right now) then we can start to make statements about UAL selling off valuable assets, ie "crown Jewels".
