McCain Blasts Pilots for Adding to Air Delays

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain
blasted airline pilots on Thursday for what he called their greed and role
in exacerbating gridlock in U.S. skies.

McCain, a Navy pilot shot down over Vietnam, accused pilots at UAL Corp.'s
(UAL.N) United Airlines of carrying out ``work stoppages to satisfy their
personal greed'' and noted a sick-out by pilots at AMR. Corp.'s (AMR.N)
American Airlines last year.

He said many parties, including the Federal Aviation Administration and
Congress, needed to shoulder the blame for aviation congestion. But he
singled out airline pilots for his toughest criticism, going so far as to
question their patriotism.

``This year, more than ever, airline employees have caused enormous
delays,'' said McCain, opening a hearing on air travel delays.

``And you know what saddens me the most? A large number of these pilots are
former military whose code is supposed to be 'duty, honor, country,''' said
McCain, who was held prisoner in Vietnam for 5-1/2 years.

``Now they take action without a thought for the Americans that rely on them
to ferry their families across the country for a family vacation, attend a
wedding or be at the side of a sick relative.''

Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) President Duane Woerth quickly voiced
outrage at McCain's comments. ``We don't take a patriotic backseat to
anybody,'' Worth told Reuters at the hearing.

During difficult contract talks this summer, United pilots often refused
overtime, causing the airline to cancel thousands of flights and leaving
passengers scrambling to make alternative arrangements.

The problems at United, the world's largest airline, combined with severe
thunderstorms in major U.S. flight lanes led to record delays this summer,
final numbers are expected to show.

Fewer flights have been canceled since a tentative contract deal was reached
late last month. ALPA has denied there was any orchestrated pilot action.

McCain also contrasted pilots' salaries with those of other Americans,
comparing the 1998 per capita income of $20,120 with the $342,000 per year
that top pilots at United would make by 2004 under the tentative contract.

The plain-speaking McCain said Congress had probably contributed to delays
by passing pork barrel legislation that gave money to smaller airports in
lawmakers' districts at the expense of the largest airports that carry the
most passengers.

He said the FAA's air traffic control modernization program had failed to
keep up with the sharp rise in passengers, with 635 million people flying
last year compared with 278 million in 1978, when the airline system was
deregulated.

Thank you for reminding us that McCain speaks reality!

McCain supports the troops? Uh-huh, and I’m busy saving the planet from an asteroid.
Bloviate (blō vē āt’): to discourse at length in a pompous or boastful manner. — American Heritage Dictionary, 2003 ed.

I’m not about to disparage McCain’s military service. Could I have done five and a half years in a North Vietnamese POW prison? Though I doubt it, there’s no way to know. I didn’t have to.

But let’s say I did, and did. Would that alone have made of me a hero? Or should that have been a consequent part of the foundation underlying my presidential qualifications?

Yeah?

Exactly how? What is there about the two stations that are related?

“No, Senator; no way!”

One would, however, anticipate that, as a veteran, one of the planks he would stand front and center on would be support of those in our military, especially those who have borne the burden of the battle. Let’s open his voting record, just to find out.

Before I get to precisely what his demonstrated voting record is on support of our military, let’s take a peek at how he's voted on other issues . . . say, kids, for example.

The Children’s Defense Fund Action Council (a nonpartisan evaluator of congress), in 2007 gave you only a 10% rating, the very worst in the senate! Here’s what you voted against:
Increase funding for children with disabilities (S. Con. Res. 21)
Protect children from unsafe medications (S. 1082)
SCHIP Reauthorization (H.R. 976)
College Cost Reduction and Access Act (H.R. 2669)
SCHIP (H.R. 976 - motion to concur)
DREAM Act (S. 2205)
Funding child health and education (H.R. 3043)
Improving Head Start programs (H.R. 1429)

And per the Congressional Record, so far this session he has missed 57 percent of all senate votes and 80% of all relating to children.

Now here’s the part that the press refuses to report and that he does not want raised: the genuine level of demonstrated support of our military, by the votes! (The ones he voted “NO” on!) They’re highlighted in bold because he ought not to be allowed to dodge them, just because someone might have missed reading them.

Please . . . No one try to use Senator McCain’s military record, his record of imprisonment in North Vietnam, his “concern” for America’s young, or his level of “support” for our uniformed fighting men and women in any fashion or way to demonstrate his suitability to be President of the United States. Loosely falling words and bloviation may persuade millions, but the unvarnished record cannot be spun. It’s in black and white, and available for any and all to investigate.

John McCain just is NOT the fellow being advertised. And if one of your relatives or associates attempts to tell you he is, give that person a copy of this, then tell them to just shut up; their ignorance is embarrassing you.

If you believe that then please explain why government tax revenues INCREASED after Bush's tax cuts were enacted.

Explain why the percentage of the total tax burden paid by wealthiest Americans INCREASED after the tax cuts.

You are confusing tax rates with tax revenue. When you charge a higher tax rate you discourage the taxed activity. Less taxable activity equals less tax revenue at the new, higher rate.

Works the same way in retail. Raise prices and sales drop resulting in lower profits. Lowering prices results in more sales and higher profits.

Agreed.
