A flight suit, huh? Something like the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds? Now picture that guy who is about 50 lbs overweight. That'll impress the customers!!

Potrack, a clip on tie is a safety item, not a fashion statement.

Why don't companies only issue clip-ons?
Prefashioned noose around your neck. Don't let a terrorist get ahold of it. Or someone junior to you for that matter;)

The first thing the terrorists did when they entered the cockpits was grab the pilots by their ties which started to strangle them as they cut their throats. Now if you think that your first response would be to forget that your circulation has been suddenly cut off and jump up and save the day, then you would be mistaken.

Had their ties broken away, which is what a clip on tie does, it give us a second or two to either a) shoot them or b) react to them.

Don't you think there's a reason that police and even Bubba the security guard wear clip ons? Granted, Bubba probably wears them out to dinner, but that probably doesn't come up much.
 
I understand. So airlines/FAA/TSA have made it mandatory that you must wear a clip-on?

Cops wear them because in their "Normal" operations they are close to dirtbags.

So prior to 911, pilots were just wearing clip-ons because??? Cheezy? Lazy?
 
Okay, my .02...

Personally, I hate wearing a coat, tie, slacks, and a WHITE shirt around an aircraft, esp since i'm the one doing the preflight/walkaround.

That being said, I try to make my uniform look good (as much as it can be with my big butt), ie clean, ironed shirts/pants, lint free, tie on properly, etc. I can understand why we do dress that way for that professional look.

I wasn't hired until after 9/11, so I never had the opportunity to a wear a tie around an aircraft. I've never thought that was a good idea, learning from early on that something like that is just one more thing than can get snagged during an emergency egress. I'm sure everyone has seen pictures of accidents caused by lack of 'sanitizing' before a flight. I personally fly with my wedding ring off, use a clip on tie, and breakaway ID lanyard.

I would rather we dress in nice dockers, belts, golf shirts in something other than white. Casual business attire.

No, the FAA hasn't made clipons mandatory, although they are certainly a good idea. I would much prefer no tie what so ever. You could look just as professional in a nice polo shirt if you ask me.

Are some of you guys serious?..that you didn't know that clip-ons were invented for, and worn by cops, etc. etc, for the purpose of avoiding being strangled? If someone grabs ahold of your regular tie with intent to do bodily harm, you're screwed. And are you saying that, even after 9/11, you still wear those pre-fabricated nooses around your necks because you think they might be "geeky"? Jeez...grow up. It's much "geekier" if one guy reaches in and drags your helpless choking butts out of the cockpit because you conveniently gave him a windsor-knotted weapon he can use against you. At that moment, I'm sure the passengers (you know, the ones who entrust you with their lives) will appreciate that you've subordinated the "minimizing risk" ethos they assume we as professionals operate under to your sense of perceived style regarding neckwear .

It amazes me that in spite of fairly recent events, some people just still can't wrap their head around the fact there are those that are still trying to figure out ways to kill them, precisely because they are the pilots, in order to kill an airplane. They'll do it with improvised weapons if need be. Don't hand it to them.

Casa's are as a general rule dirty nasty POS's that may indeed burst into flames at any moment. They also land in the mud. A flight suit would be my first choice (I didn't get a vote and I wore a flight suit). BTW with the exception of VIP aircraft all AF heavy drivers wear flight suits (even the tanker toads and strat air wiennies who go no where near the mud). A flight suit is a utility garment that is practical for almost any kind of flying. If you wash 'em enough times they even get as comfortable as your jamies (although they lose their fire retardent abilities when you do this)

I do think flight suits are a bad idea for the airlines because they invoke one of two two images: Maverick, and the guy who just changed the oil in my wife's minivan. The older and fatter I get the more I suspect I'd be mistaken for the Jiffy Lube guy, and I've never been mistaken for Tom Cruise. Stop lauging, I've seen what you flight info folks look like and you're all safe from the paparazzi too. Those beer guts and pear shaped bodies don't do well in the old flight "bag". Just don't go there.

I've noticed that even lots of the young ones are sportin' big 'ole paunches now. Is "Box of Krispy Kremes.....Onboard" part of the Close Out checklist these days, or what?
 
I'M NOT FAT, I'm just big boned! (Kartmen-esque voice)

I'm to fat and lazy to worry about looking "the part" and besides I don't wan't to freeze in the cold MKE winters;)
