UAL's profit is proof that even a blind squire can find an acorn.

This just belittles the profit announcements made by the other carriers. If a business run as poorly as UAL can do it is just easy to do right now.

The true test will come if all the airlines are able to make money this time next year. Then I will be convinced it is because they are so smart not just lucky.

Well, UA was more profitable than CO, and slightly less than AA. UA also has more money in the bank than AA, DL, CO, NW, or US (to the tune of 5.1 billion.)

So if there was a downturn next year as many predict, who would be in a better position? The company dropping money on new widebodies and expanding to every international destination under the sun, or the one putting money in the bank and consolidating on their strengths while upgrading their product.

BTW, if you look at UA's new business and first class international product, it blows every other US carrier out of the water.

AA is up to $6.4B with just under $6B in unrestricted cash. TC

UAL had 6B in the bank prior to declaring BK......They wasted it on stuff like a wasted USAir purchase, Avalor or whatever the corporate startup it was they were trying...

Do not be too convinced that with 5B in the bank UAL will come out smelling like a rose.

Get ready for a merger.....

All that money they're making, and not one uAL pilot is even miffed that you were shafted, and sold out. enjoy the 10 days off a month.

We've got our own board. 99% of us know we've been robbed. We just don't speak about it here. What's the use here? And not that it makes a diff but it's 12 days off, not 10...and we aren't enjoying it.

Yeah but just remember they still suck! I just read it on FI.com so it must be true! :)

LOL I've wanted to go to UA since I was a kid. I guess my dad being there has something to do with it. Gotta run, I have to go practice assuming the position ;).

Too bad the domestic product stinks to high heaven.....If I remember correctly, I think one or two other airlines have tried the domestic shrink while continually promoting their international ops...... Who was that? Where are they?

But seriously, all United is doing is cleaning up the balance sheet to look more lucrative for a merger. All signs point to it. Besides, your MGT is ready for their cut of it.

Y'all are some funny people. Intl growth v. domestic is good if it's at a carrier that is currently en vogue, but bad if you don't personally like that carrier? Please. You know you're losing your grip when you can complain about a profit(I'm not talking about the internal UA employees).

You really love that movie. Jeesh, Excellent. Did it also come out in Nov of 01? That's hysterical.

Going that fast they could go right over my 13 year old daughters stereo and never hear it!

How much of that was related to the kind hand out by the US government ala new "Route to China" for a company that is screwing employees, shareholders, and basically everyone around them?

Wasn't it more like 1991? It's always on TV though, so it almost seems more recent.
