Good news for UAL furloughees. Say what you will on this board about UAL's demise but when they bounce back it will be with a solid vision and competitive future.

PILOT RECALLS BEGIN NOV. 1

Good morning. This is Captain Steve Forte on Thursday, September 2.

I am pleased to report that we will begin recalling furloughed pilots on
November 1. The recalls will begin modestly - with 40 total by the end
of the year. Pilots will be notified by mail of the exact date of their
return.

This recall comes in response to an increase in pilot hours, normal
employee attrition and projected retirements. This gradual start-up
will allow us to train pilots and staff flights efficiently while
maintaining a smooth transition for our employees returning to the line.
We expect that some recalled pilots will be back flying for United as
early as December.

In addition to the recalls, we recently posted 95 new bids, creating
opportunities in both the captain and first officer ranks to move to
more senior positions. The bids close on September 6.

We're continuing to evaluate manpower needs for next year, in an
environment that keeps shifting rapidly. I'll have information about
recalls for 2005 later this year and will share it with you as quickly
as it's available. In the meantime, we are increasing capacity at the
Flight Training Center so that we are ready for our returning pilots in
November and beyond.

As someone who's been furloughed in the past, I appreciate what this
development means for our furloughed pilots and for our company at
large. I look forward to personally welcoming our recalled pilots back
to the property and sincerely appreciate the hard work that all of you
are doing day-in and day-out to keep our operation strong.

That's it for today. Fly safe and let's keep running a great airline.

Congrats to all UAL furloughees!!!!!! There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Good news indeed, but we have a long road ahead....I don't want to diminish the fact that this is good news and I am certain that it will still come accross that way, but the fact is that untill be get a management team that has the direction to take us forward, this news should not really be all that gratifying. Again, I say it is good news but one has to be cautious as we know the finanacial health of the company is not what it was 5 years ago. Off course the rebuilding and damage control takes place as we watch the airline industry transform itself.

Questions I have are:

Can UAL keep up with the changes in the industry with respect to LCC?

What kind of product do we deliver with respect to our competitor?

Cost Control VS our competitors?

Short/Long range business plan? We have yet to see them demonstrate that we have effective and competent leadership!

Anyway, it just occurred to me that this was a post regarding goodbews and I do not want to sour it with questions as I have done above. Lets just say I have concerns as to what is really happening with the airline.

Also, to those 40 furloughed pilots coming back and those that follow (bypass and beyond) I hope you realize that our support to get all furloughed pilots back has never faltered and it will be a great day when we get rid of the f-word altogether and start hiring again!

They are cutting 6000 jobs, right?

jtcalc, I think Mr. Satan was pointing out in an over the top fashion that this guy has to point to bad news instead of posting a congrats or being silent.

It's an unrestricted forum, he asked a legitimate question. And you guys think the JetBlue guys get a little self-protective? Responses like that just solidify one persons discernment of certain pilot groups and do nothing to change their belief. Lets remember it’s not the UAL ALPA board here. Not everyone shares the same rah-rah posture for anyone else’s airline as you may do. Pessimistic remarks will be made. We all live with that here, some better than others.

Of course they are

This is simple math. Senior pilots are retiring early in droves trying to beat the clock on having their retirements gutted or disappear altogether. With that many pilots running for the door they cant fly their schedule, even a greatly reduced one. I don't think this indicates anything other than that the senior guys think theyre retirement is about to disappear. Thats not good news. But hey at least theyre recalling right??

I just thought it seems weird that they would be recalling people and the next day say "we will be cutting 6000 jobs." It does not make sense to me, but I'm just ALPA outsider, an LCC a$$hole, but personally, I don't care either way. I don't get the USA Today at my house, sorry.

Another thing, I thought, I read how Continental had their pension fund "fully funded" and that they (CAL Pilots) were not concerned about it? Then, I read that CAL is not making a scheduled payment to the pension. This (if I remember it correctly) is along the same lines of this UAL info. What is there some article I missed today?

I don't care what you d!cks want to call me, it was only a question.

CAL is using provisions in the Pension Funding Equity Act to not make any pension fundings for the year.

United never announced 6,000 more job cuts - it was inferred by a news agency from a court filing. United has commented that a lot of these job cuts will come from not replacing normal attrition over a long period of time. The targets will be mx,as more work is farmed out, and headquarters.

The recall of pilots and flight attendants is due to the increase in international flying and early retirements. About 70 pilots have retired early in the past few months - since United quit paying into any defined pension plan. It is my understanding they can get a partial lump sum payment.

Great!! How many total on furlough at United?
YaMama, there are 2172 of us on furlough. I don't care to venture a guess on how many of us will return, though.

Skykid, thanks for clarifying the 6000 job thing; you're correct, that was a number extrapolated by a newspaper; I think it was a UK tabloid. I don't read USA Today, since I find it slightly more reliable than the National Enquirer.

Skykid, you are also correct on the partial lump sum. I believe (not sure, since I'm 43 and it's not yet on my radar screen) it's 10% of your total annuity amount, but it reduces your pension payments for the rest of your life. Also, there's a penalty for early retirement; I think 3%/yr, but since it's now capped at 30 yrs of service, this may not apply to some.
If someone's got $2 mil saved in his pension, the lump sum would be $200K. Not a huge incentive for someone younger than their mid-50s to leave.

SWA F/O, you sound like you've got very thin skin. You opted for severe thread drift and were hammered for it. It may have been a legit question, but it'd be like me asking on an upbeat SWA thread what's going to happen to SWA when Herb Kelleher drops dead from lung cancer.
BTW, I prefer you to call me by my formal name, Richard Cranium. D!ck is reserved for those who know me and have a deep desire to see me meet a slow painful demise. :D

Different situation than United. CAL's plan is currently funded higher than the minimum required level. The payment skipped does not violate IRS or PBGC guidlines by breaching that minimum level.
