Given the choice which would you do?

NWA made 1.3 billion last year and plans to hire like crazy. With it's monopoly hubs, huge Asian presence, and shoestring budget, it will probably plod on until it merges with someone (Delta?) The DC-9s are going away, but huge attrition should make up for the airframe loss. All signs point to the Compass E-175s eventually being flown by mainline.

UAL: Undevoted management, huge labor trouble, losing money, moderate Asian presence, fierce competition in its largest hub. But great potential with the right management team. Great group of employees I fit in well with. Lots of great contacts. My hometown airline. Titanic watch, or hit rock bottom?

So what would you do? Please no "are you nuts, they both suck" comments, because we've already heard all of that here. If you had to choose one of the other, which would you choose and why?

Now back to your question :

NWA would be my choice :

-better work rules
-possible merger with XXX
-no hats ! (at least for now)
-DC9's,.. a real mans airplane
- lots'a wide bodies (not FA's)
-747 freighter operation (gettin some new ones)
- good company, great painy jobs
- a CEO who looks like a weasel, ...really!

I would say go with the one thats got a base where you live. Thats a huge QOL + right there. ...Makes a bad contract almost seem tolerable.

Both have narrowbodies/widebodies, both have domestic/intl.

If you could go either way, roll the dice and hope for the best. There is no crystal ball.

More than likely go with the one that actually hires your sorry ass.

No offense intended.

I went with the one that hired my sorry ass.

Good luck my friend.

Is the chance that the compass thing and the 175's going to mainline a good thing? The NWA contract already released them to the regionals...Only way to get to the 175 is a back flow which may be where excess pilots will go if they get rid of the stellar DC9 too fast.

According to Steenland in a speech to the Wings Club. The DC-9 will remain until a suitable replacement is found. That replacement aircraft will be flown at mainline.

Heyas all,

Despite how much Airliners.net/SJS types think newer is better, the DC-9, even now, is extraordinarily suited to what it does.

Reliable and sturdy, these things STILL make money even when oil is $100/bbl, and passengers don't care what they look like (which is still pretty new from the inside).

If there was a boneyard somewhere with low cycle DC-9s that could be dusted off, I'm sure NWA would buy them up. This sort of happened when UAL parked all of their 727s...NWA bought up all the JT8s, which was probably enough for another 30 years flying.

Don't get me wrong, the 717 is a swell airplane, but what they were charging for them compared to flying what is essentially the same airframe "for free" is a no brainer.

One thing to say about Douglas...they built good airplanes...

If they just could have figured out how to seal the FO's window's.....but then again, coffee sweetened with glycol is nice on those early winter mornings....

My opionon: Hats are sharp and if we want be paid like professionals than maybe we should be wearing them.

Agree, and think the
leather jackets should go away.
