Don't to this day know why UAL ALPA allows EG test crews to steal your work. Every EG pilot job could/should be filled by a line holder.

For those of you still on the street,UAL Engineering, under UAL Services is looking for a Test Pilot. The job req states being a "real" test pilot is required, but don't believe it.

UAL dudes you need to get UAL MEC to close down EG Flight Test and bring the work to ALPA dues payers.

Did I mention that 4 of the EG pilots are over 60!!!

I found this from a past thread on this issue. I'm not familiar with the ins and outs, so I'm merely posting what I read from others:

The Engineering Test Pilots are specially trained and qualified to deal with the kind of stuff (engine out ferry flights) that the regular line pilot is not. I was incorrect in referring to them as "management pilots", they are not. They are normally a group, unto themselves, who are uniquely qualified to do this type of flying. Most have advanced aeronautical engineering degrees and have built their careers on this very rare and potentially dangerous specialty.

I stand on my statement that the union contracts normally "protect" the rank and file from having to undertake this type of flight assignment. This is done as a safety control/certificate maintenance position that the union takes. Yes, the union does have the "clout" to request that their members not be burdened with maintenance flying and the company agrees! There are specialists for that.

On an aside, a fellow that I worked with years ago went to work for Air Transport International (ATI) as a DC-8 first officer. I believe they are a Teamster shop rather than APLA, but I'm not certain. If I recall correctly, he was killed during an attempted take-off on a 3-engine ferry flight flown by a line crew as ATI had no Engineering Test Pilots. My point ...

UAL has, I'm told, approximately 12 Engineering Test Pilots which, in comparison to the regular pilot group would represent less than .001 of the pilot work force. Hardly a big revenue producing bunch for APLA but certainly an important feature in any large air carrier's operation. I suppose that if these individuals felt they needed ALPA's help, they could organize.

AA/APA has a similar deal with the TUL (Tulsa Engineering) test pilots. They are specifically trained in areas where regular line pilots are not. I'm kind of glad we don't have to do this type of flying, personally.

A few points:

1. AA Eng pilots are line holders
2. FedEx Eng are line holders
3. UAL is only Company where they are not.
4. They tried to organize, but ALPA didn't want them.

I don't want their job flying/testing broken airplanes.

HVY,

You guys miss the point. With well over 5000 ALPA Pilots on UAL list, I bet you could find 16 to do the job instead of the "Management" guys doing the work now.

Oh well ALPA has indeed lost its way. Your pensions are gone, as all the legacy ALPA carrier push wage cuts and work rule give backs.

ALPS could have stood up when UAL trashed pension plan by threatening a Nationwide SOS. They didn't, now ALPA's demise is slowly being written.

So much for the Brotherhood of Labor.

Only a delusional thinks there is or ever was a "Brotherhood of Labor", especially among groups from different carriers. A nationwide SOS would never work...people have little interest in sticking together. Just a fact.

I just looked through all the posts by the thread starter, and feel the need to run up the BS flag. I don't know what the motivation is, except poop stirring.

An airline pilot would probably know the difference between a line holder and one who is on the seniority list, a "line pilot."

And the previous statement,
ALPA didn't want them..
???

And the

I am just curious on a slow Sunday...So please answer this question - Indytest, are you a mechanic? Labor organizer? General pain in the butt? Or just annoyed because you are trying to get a test job but can't?

That does it! Can you imagine all those old farts flying that those freshly repaired aircraft around SFO? Suprising they don't kill thousands with that reckless behavior. They ought to publish a NOTAM anytime these old geezers are in the air. We can call it the Airborne Geezer Alert.
