looking for UAL (mainline) jumpseat policy for an off-line jumpseater. I understand that United Express (ACA) takes unlimited JS if they have the room - is mainline the same or restricted to number of JS available in the cockpit?
Thanks in advance.

UAL's off line policy is that the number of JSers allowed is equal to the number of JSeats installed in the a/c. IN ADDITION there has to be an open seat in the back for you to sit in. Unfortunately, you also have to battle the gate agents who for the most part think they OWN the jumpseat, and that THEY will dicatate wether or not you get it.

Priority is mainline, express, and then others. If you fall within the categories, it will be seniority based for mainline, and first come first served for the others (Express included)

It's a shame in this day and age that they do not have an unlimited JS policy. (Actually they do- in they're last contract they had/have a clause which states that in case the company starts to charge for pass writing again- which they have done- then the company will allow as many jumpseaters as there are open seats. HOWEVER- since the whole CH11 debacle, spending in excess of $300k to reprogram their load planning software and reservation systems has fallen by the wayside. All of this explained to me by a ticked off UA ALPA guy who was intent on filing as many grievances as he could since they started bending the pilots over.)

Enjoy the Un-friendly skies.....

SmackYourPappy,

You are correct. It is a sad but true fact of the UAL JS policy. I spoke with VP of flight ops on it and he gave me some BS about the FAA and UAL POI having a problem with it. All I can say is try to talk to the Capt and every now and then you can get on with more than one. Yes it is rare but worth a shot! Sorry it is not as relaxed as many other carriers and hopefully one day it will be like others out there. Just another political point management like to put on us.

UA JUMP SEAT

I am a commuter from ord-iad and I would have to say that 75% of all the UA CA's stick to the "Installed jumpseat policy". I have had nothing but positive experiences jumping back and forth and always appreciate the ride to work and back home.

Shoot for the A320's and the 767's as they have two jumpseats. UA's 757's only have one Jumpseat except for 4 or 5 of them running around in the system. I have also found that most UA pilots are willing to travel as a BP-10 which costs them $5.50 if there are seats in the back avail.. Usually a friendly thank you and a cup of coffee works in return..

Cheers
