I sure hope this isn't true.......................is it?
Where does that take the predicted junior hire date?
hmmmm."
Takeoff Thrust, I hope I can answer your question.
Almost every F/O I fly with either has a pending furlough date, or expects one. The junior pilot on our list right now has around a 6/98 seniority. If I recall, we were hiring a lot of guys during that period, so my guess is that the furlough could cut into the 97 hires. That is really rough, but looking at the USAir guys with 16 years seniority who got furloughed makes one realize that others are even worse off. This whole situation is a bummer for all. The only bright aspect (I try to look at the silver linings) is that airlines like JetBlue, ATA and Southwest seem to have no problem hiring the furloughees, and these airlines seem like they provide a wonderful work environment. Those pilots who end up at one of these airlines may end up with the last laugh after all. For them, the furlough may end up being a great thing, as they might not have looked around otherwise.
The "official" word for UAL furloughs is 80 per month (plus how ever many are also taking a leave of absense) until down to 6200-6500 line pilots (seniority around 7200-7500). I don't know what number we are on now. However, management says that the bankruptcy process could alter that number depending on the results of the aircraft lease negotiations (1110 process). For anyone under seniority 5000 or so (and perhaps even for those far up the seniority list who want quality of life and a better "culture") I would suggest applying to one of the other good companies out there that are hiring.
