FLIGHT OPS FOCUS: PILOT FURLOUGHS

IMPORTANT FLIGHT OPS INFO FROM CAPT. STEVE FORTE

We have a very important development regarding furloughs and I want to
make sure you are among the first to hear about it. Based on our
preliminary plan for 2004, we anticipated having to furlough to between
6,900 and 7,100 on the seniority list. At the general rate of about 80
active pilots each month, this would have extended the furloughs to
approximately March or April of next year.

We just received the new block hour estimates for 2004, which came in
higher than the original plan. As a result, we do not anticipate any
additional furloughs beyond those already announced for January 8.

After January 8, the most junior pilot number will be 7,256, bringing
the total number of pilot furloughs to 2,172. Unfortunately, we do not
expect to begin recalling any pilots in 2004.

I know from first hand experience how difficult this situation can be
for you. But things are looking up and it is becoming more and more
clear that United is getting stronger every day. I'll keep you posted
as we move ahead.

Best regards,

Captain Steve Forte

OH GREAT!!!!

Now I can wait until 2005 for the 1672 ahead of me to start getting recalled so my number will come up.

I'm glad this is good news for someone. For the forgotten ones who were furloughed in Oct 2001. It doesn't mean squat. Just like we havn't meant squat to them for the past 2+ years.

Even though we were the first to be furloughed, (no time for preparation) we will be the last to see the feeder airline jobs. The current furloughees have had the benefit of time to save money and make changes in their lifestyle etc. In addition they will go right into jobs at the feeders. Thanks UA and thanks ALPA for nothing.

I will be an old man before I ever would get called back by UA.....and if I were to exercise that right, I put myself right back in that vulnerable position of OCT 2001, poised for the next downturn in the economy or (God Forbid) the next 9/11.

I hope this post makes a few of the "lucky ones" think, and bring a few in my boat back to reality.

Well, at least the bleeding has stopped. I believe that recalls will begin shortly after the emergence of Ch.11. Just my unfounded opinion.

Hey fmr727drvr, what class were you in?
I'm about 500 from the bottom too. Just curious.

Just curious... How are those feedre, as you call them, jobs yours to go strait into? From the regional standpiont, what do we get in return? Airways is doing it to us, walking into a job with no real interview or anything.

When this all turns around, will you guys have the regional pilots that work their butts off day in and day out just flow right into a job with the mighty U, or will you guys revert back to your squadron buddies? Just currious, but seems to me that the regionals should get dibs on ANY new jobs at United or Airways after all we have taken up the backside for you.

I don't know all the details so please don't hold me to this.

There is some kind of agreement between UA, ALPA, and Sky West and Mesa. Basically a kind of compromise with regards to scope.

ALPA has agreed to allow more Express flying in exchange for opportunities for furloughees. It is definately a hot item among you guys. I understand because I was an Eagle puke for over 10 years.

I would have more to say about if it affected me somehow but it doesn't, so this dog is not in the fight.

Former Fellow Commuter Dog, and FMR727DRVR.

The last group of pilots at UAL to get furloughed a long time ago were out up to 7 years, I ran into one that was out for the full 7 and he was now a 400 captain, not a scab either. He was still bitter about it however I am sure the 300K he was, and that is a big was, pulling down made up for it a little. I agree that recalls will be sooner than predicted, save any more economic down turn or anything worse. TED will require a lot of pilots and it sounds like 40 planes may only be the beginning ??? I bet all UAL Airbuses will be sporting the new digs soon. Anyway, keep hanging in there, with the new management team in place making obvious and maybe not so obvious changes, my .02 worth says that it will be a good company that will not only survive but prosper as well. Some of the old timers I have talked too are very optimistic as well, not everyone is a cynic (sp?) Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and here is to making it back to a company worth going back to !

Fellow Furloughee with a thousand or so out above me.
