US Airways flight slides off runway in Pittsburgh


(PITTSBURGH-AP) -- A U-S Airways flight slid off the runway at Pittsburgh International Airport this morning after passengers say the jet hit an owl.

There were no injuries but there were a few irritated travelers.

They say they were delayed by four hours before they took off from Charlotte, North Carolina. Passengers then had to wait about three hours in Pittsburgh to get their luggage.

The jet got stuck in the mud and passengers were taken by bus to the terminal.

They say they were never told what was happening as they waited on the plane.

Passengers sitting near the wing say they saw a ball of flame near the engines after the collision.

There were about 90 passengers on the flight.

The main concern of these people was that they had to wait three hours for their luggage???

A delay may ruin your day, but a crash may ruin your life.

These people should be thankful that they are alive!

That is an understatement! I am convinced that 95% of the population should not walk around unassisted.

The pilots are lucky that they get to close the door and lock out the stupidity. I am certain I could entertain everyone for hours with "interesting" passenger stories. I keep thinking that I should formulate a stand-up comic routine from all the stories I have.

I'm not disagreeing, but...

...let's give the benefit of the doubt to those on the right hand side of the bell curve *and* not sitting over the wing.

If they didn't see the pretty ball of flame from the engine and the crew couldn't be bothered with an announcement then is it any wonder they were ticked off?

Come to think of it, if I saw a ball of flame *and* didn't hear an announcement I'd be ticked off.

The back story here is, of course, employees who don't care about the customers.

How in the world did the pax know it was an owl? I've had windshield bird strikes on takeoff roll before and even we couldn't tell what kind of bird it was.

I saw the film clip at PIT, looked like a A320? but I was wondering, assuming the crew had time, could they have used differiential braking/thrust to keet the bird on the cement? I dont know much about the Airbus systems, but I have had a failure in the nose wheel steering and that is what we did to keep her out of the mud...

Just looking in my Log book for the incident, we were flying into Charleston SC with a loaded C-141...

Funny about PAX stupidity, my wife worked at Disney. She said in training, they told her that most people check their brains at home, before they check their luggage. Hey, what time is the three o'clock parade? Airplane PAX are no different.
