Anyone been into Almaty lately?

Anybody?
It's almost a regular world class airport now with it's own website and an almost completed new terminal.

Lots of runway: 14436 X 183

UTC + 6

Airport elevation: 2234

The approach will remind you of Jackson Hole

Tower speaks English

FBO is Streamline OPs (+7-095-241-6593)

Air Routing does handling as does Universal through FERAS (+7 -095-436-7349).

There's even a Hyatt Regency (+7 -3272-503710) in town now, used to be you stayed at the Hotel Kazakhstan or the Hotel Kazakhstan.

Gosh, you get to go to all the garden spots.

FedEx goes every day (or is it most days?).

The IATA code for Almaty is ALA - - apropos - - also the acronym for "Approach and Landing Accident".

Fly Safely!

Great.

Just in case we end up at "Smoking Hole Airport" I'll bring some marshmallows!

Now, where to stay in Dar es Salaam?

Bumped your head! Shaq probably would too if he wasn't careful. For us normal sized six footers the 6'2" cabin height is jus' fine.

I haven't been to Tanzania since I left the military, but we used to stay at the Holiday Inn. The Royal Palm is pretty good, too. There are several beach hotels that look pretty nice, but I haven't stayed in them.

It's a beautiful place. It was a Portuguese colony until the Omani Arabs teamed up with the locals to toss them out. Lots to see and do. Zanzibar is the former Omani capital and a short boat ride from Dar es Salaam. Then there's always Mount Kilamajaro if you're feeling adventurous.

Stay away from the Embassy.

Wish I was going.

GV

Been to Mt. Kilimanjaro. NBD.

Stayed at the Intercontinental in Nairobi and drove around the corner past the hole where that embassy used to be. I shouldnt have been driving, we got mugged there.

You can go if you want! I'll save you a seat. Right now I gotta go to Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai.

Living the dream.

Emp,
I just looked up where Uaaa is...jeez!! What airport are you flying out of? Can you do it non-stop? If so, how long of a flight would that be?

We will fly from KMMU "EMPTY" to Basel Switzerland spend the night then Basel to Macau then Macau to Taipei, to Narita, to Osaka, to Seoul, to Bejing, to Shanghai, back to Basel then "empty" back to KMMU. We will be on the road for 14 days.

Over New Years we get to go to Dar es Salaam out of Basel for 10 days.

At least they took UAAA out of the above trip but added Osaka. Our company is a Swiss company based in Basel. They have another Global there but it is only for the Chairman. Our Global supports the Swiss.......allot.

If you are really nice to dispatch they will stick you in the Lear and you can be home at night....As you can see from my above schedule I havent bought them a present lately.

Emp,
You mentioned that you (and crew I assume?) were mugged in Nairobi. Care to share any details? I'm not looking for a good story, just hoping to learn something about international travel. After all, the old saying is "learn from others mistakes because you won't live long enough to make them all yourself."

Does anybody else have any stories or lessons learned to share?

Make sure you're able to keep LC awake!! Maybe he'll bring me back a present or two from the "Hub City".

LC is going to have to keep me awake.

Wait, thats what the egg timer is for. We have one F/A that checks the cockpit every 10 minutes after the 10th hour enroute. Dam he can cook too. Crab cakes, pot stickers, steak....anything you can think of.

Must be that Italian heritage he comes from!!! I just hope he's not wearing an apron! Or maybe I do?
