Hey guys/gals,

A fellow crewmember mentioned to me something about and airline that landed in Europe and was required to have a type rated FO before taking off. He told me he forgot were he read the article. Does anyone know anything about Europe moving towards all FOs to be type rated on the airplane?

Thanks..

I don't know for sure, but I think he's right. I believe it's not just JAA rules, but ICAO rules. Somebody correct me?

What? an ATI guy who doesn't know the ICAO regs?
Say it ain't so! Actually, it has been an ICAO requirement for both pilots to be type rated where type rating are required. FAA and US operators have been ignoring this for years. European Civil Aviation Authorities, mainly UK- CAA and French DGCA have been "ramp checking" business aircraft. There has been more than one case where the aircraft was not allowed to leave until a type rated FO was brought in.

I believe many ICAO member states have, for a lack of a better term, an SIC type rating as well as the PIC type that we have in the US. That's the rub... that's what the Europeans are looking for. Since we don't have an equivalent, the only way to comply is to be PIC rated in the airplane. I've read where the FAA is considering coming up with something similar to their requirement. It doesn't sound like FO training would change but, after you complete it, an "SIC only" type for that aircraft would be added to your certificate.

You are right Clutch, the heat is being turned up by the Europeans, hence the recent FAA NPRM for SIC type ratings.
