Is there anything other than the 5 hour PIC minimum for someone to instruct in a Piper Meridian?
Or even to be legal to fly it, is there something like a type rating for turbo props other than high performance end.?

For turboprops, the need for a type rating is determined by the max gross takeoff weight. I believe the Meridian falls far below the "12,500 lb" line.

The real world answer is insurance. The Malibu/Meridian family has developed a reputation, not entirely undeserved, for getting undertrained (and underskilled) pilots into trouble. You will need to be certain that you are covered under a good policy, and that policy will most likely require specialized training and time in type, particularly if you are giving instruction.

This is the difference between what the FAA says is permitted, and what the people who are REALLY in charge say is permitted.

The Golden Rule: he who has the gold, makes the rules.

If you're referring to 61.195 (f) ....

You don't even need 5 hours PIC to instruct in it. Its a single! (Legally speaking)

Also, Legally speaking, I could instruct in a King Air 90 and I have no time at all in that make and model.

61.195 (f) only applies if the person receiving the instruction is receiving that instruction for a certificate or rating.

If I were to instruct a student for a Private Multi in a C90 I would be illegal unless I had 5 hours in make and model.

However, if a person asked me to do a Flight Review or an IPC or just fly with them to get them proficient again, I could do that.

Clear as mud right???
