For turboprops, the need for a type rating is determined by the max gross takeoff weight. I believe the Meridian falls far below the "12,500 lb" line.
The real world answer is insurance. The Malibu/Meridian family has developed a reputation, not entirely undeserved, for getting undertrained (and underskilled) pilots into trouble. You will need to be certain that you are covered under a good policy, and that policy will most likely require specialized training and time in type, particularly if you are giving instruction.
This is the difference between what the FAA says is permitted, and what the people who are REALLY in charge say is permitted.
