Turbulent times may produce new turboprop opportunities
Dateline: Thursday December 09, 2004

The ongoing financial struggles of mainline carriers could yield new opportunities for turboprop aircraft, according to Saab Aircraft Leasing President and CEO Michael Magnusson.

"When business was good, you could afford to fly an RJ on short stage lengths," he said. But turboprops may find a new lease on life as mainline carriers trying to rein in their costs take another look at the fuel-efficient aircraft for some of their Regional flying.

"There are no longer unacceptable scenarios," Magnusson said. He noted that ExpressJet, a Regional partner of Continental Airlines, recently issued an RFP for 10-15 turboprops. The carrier, which shed its turboprop aircraft a few years ago, currently operates a fleet of ERJ-145s.

Magnusson noted that RJs are "great" on routes of between 300 and 500 mi. but that turboprops continue to be the best choice for routes of less than 200 mi. "There is no debate--there is still room for turboprops, but the size of the room is debatable." Orders for RJs in the 50-seat range have diminished, financing for new aircraft is difficult to obtain and there are fewer viable turboprop markets in which to place RJs, he noted. At the same time, the focus is on larger RJs in the 70/110-seat range, "which is good for us. It takes them farther away from us."--Sandra Arnoult

Just heard from the CP in IAH that XJT will be changing its name to XTP and will begin delivery 342 J31, and J41 aircraft with options for 100 more beginning in March 05. Its happenning for real. We will also be lowering our hiring requirements to 100 hrs TT or 50 Dual recieved for:) ERAU students.

Now lets see who gets all in a huff about this.

Doesn't "RFP" specifically mean that ExJet was/is shopping for another company to provide TP service, as opposed to doing it ourselves?

I heard the following:

SkyWest wants out of TP flying.

Gulfstream, CapeAir, and CommutAir are bidding on TP flying for XJT. Deadline ofr bids mid-December.

FWIW

i'm curious.. is this 'rfp' saying that xjet is looking to have another airline fly turboprops 'for xjt,' as opposed to 'for cal?'

That's a good question. It seems that it would be CAL that would be putting out the RFP, not XJ.

Lets make sure we are getting this right.

XJT DOES NOT SOLICIT FEED FROM OTHER AIRLINES!!!!!!!

CAL may be looking for additional or different TP feed but XJT has nothing to do with who CAL does or doesn't do business with.

XJT has indicated that it has no interest in turbo props of any kind so CAL has looked elswhere for its need in that regard.

XJT only exist at this point to serve CAL, so there is no operation within the XJT corp. structure that would support "feed" to XJT.

Got it? I hope.

Adios.

Gee, thanks for clearing that up. I think most of us uninformed chaps were simply noting that the article said that EJ was looking for a partner, and that it didn't make much sense.
