Ok, so it wasn't actually a fire, that's a metaphor, but it was interesting. It's my second IOE flight as captain on the DC-6, departing out of ANC with a full load, #1 starts misbehaving. Ignition analyzer shows that it's a sick, sick engine (not miuch of a surprise at that point) so we feather it and return for a relatively uneventful landing ..D@mn, I'd figured that now with the training and type ride behind me, I was done with having an engine fail on every takeoff, silly me. It got me thinking back to IOE when I was an F/O. It was again about my second IOE flight and on my first takeoff we lost power on an engine at about V1 on a dark IFR night. I wonder; is someone trying to tell me something ?????
