Whats the deal with Trans States, they lowered their minimums to 250TT and 25ME, then there's PSA who has no minimums anymore. Is it because all the pilots are leaving because they hate the company? I heard it's because all the senior pilots for the majors are all the Vietnam era pilots and they are all reaching retirement age at the same time, and the airlines in China, India, etc are growing big time and hiring all our senior pilots and putting them over their. Sounds reasonable, but is it true? None of the other regionals are reducing their minimums that drastically. It makes me wonder about the quality of life at TSA & PSA. Thoughts, comments?

Theses airlines are having to cancel flights because there arent enough Captains and First Officers to cover them. US Airways mainline has started recalls and alot of the J4J Captains are leaving as well as Captains that heave been here 10 years. Alot of people are going to Southwest and Continental and some to Jet Blue. PSA has finally started upgrade classes and is beginning new hire classes of 12-15 for FO's. For a while, PSA was having problems with people failing out of training. There would be a class of 6 FO's and 4 would not pass the sim or IOE. Lowering the hiring mins is going to get FO's on site, as sh!tty as it may be that someone can get hired the day after they pass their COMM ME checkride, it's what is needed to get planes in the air.

I am GLAD these companies are canceling flights and feeling the pain. That is what happens when you want to take advantage of the pilot groups. Don't pay them and see what happens. Word gets out that the dream job is no longer a dream job but rather a poorly paid, under insured and very impolite business.

I still like my job but dealing with screw scheduler who think they are god and all the other drama is just plain sad.

I know the facts, I have been here long enough to know how to run the race. I think the word is out and no kid in college wants to put up with this BS anymore.

So to the CEOs I say to "you made your beds and now enjoy sleeping in them!"

you asked for it

where are you now?

I work for a Banner Tow Company somewhere in Florida. I came here in February because the boss told me I would be flying "at least" 100 hours a month. I spent a lot of money on a UHaul moving my family all the way from the west coast to Florida. In the last 3 months I have flown 10 hours. I got the ten hours because I paid $2500 for banner tow training to get my endorsement. My boss owns a very succesful generator sales and repair business. He makes 10 times the money with this business than he does with his banner business. He asked me when he hired me if I wouldn't mind working a few hours in his shop helping the mechanics repair, build and install generators to "supplement" my income. I told him sure, I don't mind hard work. Since February that is all I have been doing. Oh, and his Dad brought in his 30' boat the other day and the boss had me sand and paint the interior. He also had me in his yard the other day digging holes and planting trees. If I'm really lucky, I get to mow his lawn. No flying at all, just working for $6/hour changing oil filters, getting greasy, doing b!tch work at the shop. He just informed me he has got a couple big contracts coming up for some big generators to be built and installed and he's making over 600K on the deal. So he said he needs me on this job, and not to expect to fly for the next couple months. I was also informed I will still be making only $6/hr and if I didn't like it, I was replaceable. My rent is $760/month and I made $75 in March, and $208 in April (he screwed me, and shorted my check by $280). Luckily I have some great parents that help out with the rent these last couple months. This is the situation I am in.

Are you flying in PIE? There was a crooked banner guy there in 2004, looking to pick up unwitting saps willing to pay for "training," where pilots essentially earn back the money they fronted. This particular operator had a fatal in '01. I'm sorry that you're getting screwed by this guy, and if it's the same guy that I am referring to my advice is this, LEAVE NOW.

No, not PIE, I heard of that guy though. But I am trying to leave! LOL

dcramer16. I contacted that same guy about a year ago. He told me the same stuff. i talk to some people around daytona and they told me exactly what he does. Asks you to pay for a banner tow rating (which there is no such thing) and fly you butt off after that. Everyone i talked to said he was a crook and to avoid him. I wish i could of got to you first, and worn you about him. Sorry he screwed you. Get out as fast as you can.

Jesus, this is like dejavu...

I had a similar situation, although not quite as bad. Worked for some crook in ATL that promised a buttload of banner flying.

Ended up doing all the setups while he was the one that actually towed. I think I logged an hour or two within a month and a half...that was long enough of being strung around by that lying a s shole.

Damn! I feel for ya. Get your Comm ME and go to work for PSA. It was not for me but at least you will fly and get paid.

Dude, you need to quit today. This guy is crook. You would make more money working at Wal Mart or Home Depot then continue to look for flying work. Get out, please.

I heard a rumor that both PSA and Piedmont are getting short on captains because of attrition, but that the company is refusing to let senior FOs upgrade because they don't have any newhires to replace them in the right seat. Is there any truth to that?

Same thing is going down at TSA. Last I heard, all summer upgrade classes were being cancelled due lack of FO's. Sounds like ti is getting ugly out there ecspecially for those companies that demonstrated bad faith with their employees in the past.

Too bad they just don't, oh I dunno...up the pay, abide by the contract, act once in a long while in good faith toward the pilot group....

Guess you reap what you sew, right? Hope it hits em right in the checkbook...

this has been the same for Colgan Air. Upgrade went from 12 months to two years because of the lack of people to fill the FO slots.....Real nice Colgan.

Tim Pacini is a scum bag POS MF'er! I got suckered into the pay for banner tow training thing also. I got down there and he tried to blow me thru the training with only a few hours of flight time. I made it very clear face to face with that sack o'sh** that we would have some serious problems in the next 10 seconds if I did not get my money's worth out of his "training". That's what it takes to get what you want out the Rat Bastard. I guess the only saving grace is that it was over Spring Break and I was in Daytona. He preys on people's good faith and dreams of flying. Get away from Pacini and head down to FLL/MIA go to Aerial Banners or Sky Signs. Or better yet if your willing to eat sh** like you are put in with one of these regionals with low to no minimums and skip the risky flying. Oh and if your gonna chase crappy jobs reduce the crap you trake with you to what you can carry in your car. It's cheaper to buy the basics than haul them.

Glad you see in my way...lol Thanks for the advice :)

oh and next time he get's you to work on his boat take a hole saw and install a port hole below the water line. Play stupid "sorry boss, I thought I was helping out". That's what you get when you pay $6 per hour. Just make sure it's big enough that the bilge pump won't keep up!!

Speaking of taking on water....PSA is doing just that right now, and the "bilge pump" is MEL'd. Had a few days off in the beginning of the month, and the schedulers were wearing the battery out on my phone every day begging. They're giving out illegal extensions and junior mans in the futile hope we just wont notice they've violated the contract. The problem is everyone's aware of their game because they aren't even a little tactful about it, and they wont meet us halfway to get things done. They have yet to realize a little flexibility would go a long way to getting us to help even if we don't have to. They will not stray from the contract when it's to their advantage but they act like we've shot their dog when we adhere to it.
I think they are trying to hire but as usual it's too little too late. Besides, half of the guys they do hire aren't showing up for class and of the half that do show up, half of them can't pass the training. Maybe TK & KH will finally get to explain their BS management skills to someone of consequence once we get finished stranding all those summer vacationers. Tempe can't be aware of this and just allow it because it's suicidal for the company which is skating on thin ice as it is. It's bad enough Amtrak has a better on time record than we do, but at least they have a decent completion factor. It's only going to get worse....which reminds me...congrats to all the blue streakers who have found salvation from this shipwreck...glad to see people moving on to better places!

Lets see, last night they canceled the MSY and MGM over nights and they have already canceled the first 3 MGM turns out of CLT today. And that's just what I know about. I'm sure there are more.

The best was when they tried to junior man me last week when I was already flying a trip.

Side note: For guys that have ACARS, is that considered a legal method of getting hold of you to call scheduling? It's questionable at best as far as I can tell.

Note to Colgan Pilots: This is what happens when you have a contract. They can't force you into working on your days off. CommutAir, for example, has just unilaterally taken away two days off from everybody because they're understaffed. No negotiation necessary, as they're also non-union and have no defined work rules.

Just something to think about...

Martin said the reason why there is a shortage of pilots at regionals is because of the retirements at the majors.

Shows he is not in touch with reality.

There is a pilot shortage at regionals because the pay and working conditions suck. And there is only a limited amount of dumb people like me willing to do it. No comments needed!
