To Strike or Not to Strike at ASA

What is everyones opinion on a strike vote and if taken would there be enough support for it to pass?

Because I don't see any good coming from a strike. I'm happy here and given what is happening around us, it could be alot worse. Look at CMR. Was their strike worth it? I also see a lot of the pro-strike crowd actually trying to hurt the company by burning more gas - not smart in my opinion. Sorry I want ASA to grow - that will be good for all of us.

An ASA strike vote is like the democrats threat to filibuster judge Alito...it makes a lot of noise, but in the end it won't happen.

BTW I agree with the above post. This is a new situation, people who try to hurt the company by wasting gas, etc, only hurt themselves. You drive up the costs, the flying goes to someone else, wheather it is Skywest, or Mesa, or Chautauqua.

Why don’t you divide your monthly pay by your TAFB and truly see what you get paid per hour while at work. You may be surprised that your airline income could be replaced by working at McDonalds. I’m glad I left ASA because if I knew who you two were, I would hit you with my overweight flight bag.

If you guys vote on a s*$%y contract your wonderful management team with be the ones getting a pay raise.

No, you are right. But if you vote on a strike, and the MEC decides to do it, it is a done deal. I agree, you have some leverage with a strike vote, but once voted in, you are at the mercy of the MEC. That is just a chance we may have to take.

Those who adapt survive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Regionals are not airlines, they are contractors, and generally speaking contracts go to the lowest bidder. If you knew me you'd know that I would never advocate putting up the white flag, but when you purposely drive up your costs you're only screwing yourself.

Be strong and negotiate, but when you sabotage your operation, you're driving yourself out of a job.

Look at UA and AA and their management stock grants. Bankruptcy or not, management will get theirs.

I don’t think that you should strike for not getting a pay raise, but I would strike if QOL issues were not improved by leaps and bounds. There are many items that can be given to the pilots at ASA that cost little or no money. Management was dragging their feet on those issues when I left and from what I hear they are still dragging their feet.

Regionals are contractors, but they can’t be replaced overnight. Think how long it would take to replace 1800 pilots. I was in the training department before I left and a new hire pilot took 2 – 2.5 months to get online. That was with the training machine running full steam. Not to mention they would need to find enough instructors and workers willing to scab. Two months of a 100+ aircraft sitting on the ramp collecting dust would sure make the shareholders happy. As a contractor in your position, strength only comes in numbers. It is time to stand up and fight for fair contract. If ASA and Skywest pilots make a stand then maybe the wonderful MESA pilots will grow a set and follow suit.

At least do your coworkers and the industry a favor and not show your yellow streak on a public forum. If you are going to vote no then you are in the extreme minority or just management trying to scare the voting members. After 3.5 years of negotiating with no serious progress made I hope to see a 100% in favor of a strike vote.

Don’t forget management’s job is to scare the pilots into thinking that the sky is falling. They will promise you growth and aircraft if you are the lowest paid and the hardest worked. Look at those airplanes that Comair never received after voting for a pay freeze.

Your correct, and it also could mean the end of ASA. The upside reward vs. the potential downside isn't enough for me to vote yes.

ACA, AirWis, Comair, Coex, all had great contracts... They then all got there balls kicked in. Looking at that how can you say getting a good contract stops the spiral to the bottom? I'm not drinking management Koolaid I'm just looking around the industry and that's what I see. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I made about $86,000 last year on the 50 seater. Would have been about $95,000 on the 70. What McDonalds is paying that? That is with a 3 on, 4 off schedule. I guess I'm just stupid for thinking that isn't a bad deal. Maybe I should just go work at McDonalds.

Let's see if they still have jobs, or how the strike works out for them. Too early to use this as a reason to vote yes. Aren't the NWA mechanics still on strike? I hear many of them are crossing back over to go back to work.
