What a kok. Being one who flys this aircraft on this route regularly, I'd like to publish some examples of Aspenite attitude in that same rag.

Like:

The time I was approached, cursed at, harassed, and told I was "incompetant" by a passenger in the terminal (in front of other passengers) when we were weather delayed.

The time a woman uncaged her poodle in flight and allowed it to urinate on the floor during the 20 minute leg.

The time a guy came up to the flight deck during my preflight brief and demanded we "hurry up with the paperwork" (He took the bus that day)

The times they've made the gate agents cry.

The time I held a plane 10 minutes to accomadate a late connecting couple. When they arrived at the gate and saw the Dash-8 they said I'm not flying on that thing, and insisted they were re-booked into the 146.

It never ends with these rich spoiled A-holes. Sometimes I actually enjoy making the PA and telling them that we've gone missed and will be returning to Denver. In those cases, I DO pity the poor FA.

These sound like the same people that Colgan has in Bar Harbor and Hyannis every summer. I guess their G-V's are in the shop alot or their pilots are on vacation. If someone acts like that, they are a "wannabe". On a brighter note, I actually witnessed a TV producer scold his kids for acting like jerks in the airport at BHB. That incident gave me new faith in humanity.

So some small-minded liberal Aspen "Ken Doll" lost his RJ service to his little elitist village.He11,he probably even whined about that service, too!!

PHXFLYR:cool:

Well, you may not like that Ken Doll but Ken has the ear of the flying public and right or wrong they do spend the money on our planes. So, the upper ups just might want to listen to this guy and correct the situation. If I was spending 1,000+ USD to fly into Aspen I think I would have the right to make demands on the service. This isn't a greyhound passenger. It's a guy flying into the 3rd or 4th best market that United has! He's certainly entitled to his opinion.

this type of passenger:

they're used to throwing money at any situation and watching it go away. when it dosent go away, they have a problem with it. i dunno if they slept at a holiday inn express last night but they probably slept somewhere more expensive and are even smarter now.....right?

You can add Sun Valley, Jackson Hole, and Santa Fe to the list of problem-passenger cities.

As to the $1000 ticket price between DEN and ASE, nice try, but UAL offers fares before Jan 31 2005 as low as $95.

From Travelocity:

Round-Trip Price: USD 95.00+

I used to fly for Great Lakes and I can second SAF being a place for "challenging passengers". For a town that is supposed to be the epi-center of the New Age/"love one and all" movement, there were an awful lot of people happy to leave their garbage behind for you and more than happy to let you know that a turboprop was "beneath" their status in life. Of course, there were a lot of good passengers, but SAF had the highest rate of rude passengers of any city in Lakes' system.

Yah... "AS LOW AS". Doesn't mean all the tickets are that cheap. This isn't UALs 3rd or 4th most provitable route because it charges just 95 bucks for each seat. So in turn to you...nice try.

And so what if they pay 95 dollars for their seat? They aren't deserving of respect and consideration? I think many here forget just why we are able to fly these spiffy planes to and fro. It's because OF the passengers that we do this. Do you treat other company non-revs like dirt? They didn't pay ANYTHING to be there so they must not be deserving of respect either. I'll remember that the next time I see one of you. Shhheeeezzzz. [/sarcasm]

Maybe trying to do some educating is needed on each flight. When someone asks a question, no matter how dumb you think it is, answer it with profesionalism instead of calling the flying public "ignorant". Most people just might take offense to that word. Great job.

Duh! I know what "as low as" means. But a lot of the other, more expensive tickets were still only in the $100+, $200+ range, and that was for round trip. Still nowhere near $1000.

I'm not saying be rude to any pax. But we're not talking to them here, are we? I think it's OK for people to vent a little bit here in this forum about the "annointed" pax that think they're too good to fly on your "little plane."

BUT if they are abusive to the crew or the agents, they DO need to take the bus.

Yeah, I couldn't get the link to work either because it gets truncated somehow when pasted in, but a quick search of the Aspen Times yielded the article:

Dear Editor:

In response to Andy Stone's "To hell and back - on a turboprop" (Aspen Times, Dec. 2), if he's so unhappy with the Dash 8, he could always drive for three-plus hours from Denver to Aspen (no snow on roads).

Air Wisconsin's Bae Jet would get "blown all over the sky" just as much as the Dash in similar turbulence. Rocky Mountain weather doesn't care how small or large the aircraft is, you're going to get bounced, period. He just happened to pick a bad day for a smooth ride. On such a short flight, it makes no sense for an aircraft (jet or turboprop) to climb to a high altitude, and the speed difference of a jet is negligible.

We regularly fly at 25,000 feet - that's not very low in my opinion. Also, can he honestly say 300 mph on the Dash is really too slow for him? Just because an aircraft has props doesn't mean it is slow. Passengers see the props and automatically and incorrectly think old, slow, unsafe. That's just general public ignorance. As a side note, most of the Dash 8s were built less then 10 years ago, using the same state-of-the-art technology used on modern jets.

As far as Andy's third-world country experience with Gate 61 is concerned, one must understand that consumers want cheap tickets, resulting in low revenues and razor-thin profit margins for the airline. The only way for airlines to provide these cheap tickets is to cut back on expenses. Naturally, the red carpet treatment has vanished. Flying is now cheaper than it was 20 years ago. You can't have your cake and eat it too. The airlines are simply providing what the consumers want.

I know it's an abused cliché but, you get what you pay for. You want better service, start paying for it and don't complain about high ticket prices.

Happy landings.
