I was sent this course via CD in the mail: Weather Wise: Thunderstorms and ATC. It's also online at http://www.aopa.org/asf/online_courses/

Some good info, particularly about intensity of preciptitation and differences in Tracon (ASR) and Center radar reports. The old system of ranging radar echo intensity from 1 to 6 is being replaced with 4 levels: light, moderate, heavy (and I belive extreme, someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Extreme

Ground based NEXRAD used to have 6 levels, but that is being replaced by four:

Light = 0.1" rain/hr
Moderate = 0.5" rain/hr
Heavy = 2" rain/hr
Extreme - > 2" rain/hr
