I just saw on the news that at DIA the TSA made 2 penguins that were being transported by a zoo be taken out of their cages and made to walk through the metal detector. You have got to me kidding me. What is this aganecy coming to? Quit wasting our time and start profiling.

I transported a couple of cats as checked livestock a year ago and after I was finished at the ticket counter, I was escorted by a TSA agent to an area where the felines were removed, patted down and wanded. The cage was searched, the cats were put back in and the TSA sealed and stickered the cage with a plastic tie wrap thing. I think these TSA folks have gotten so used to carrying out these stupid rituals that they probably don't even think they're stupid rituals anymore.

Soon after 9/11, I flew from the East Coast to Orange County to pick up my two persian cats and bring them back to the East Coast with me. My folks met me at the airport with the kitties in their carriers. The cats had to be taken out of their carriers and walked through the metal detector. My folks weren't travelling that day, so they weren't allowed to walk the cats through the metal detector. I was already on the secured side, so they wouldn't let me walk them through the metal detector. After 20 minutes the TSA finally decided that one of them would walk the cats through. I've never seen so much fur fly and never heard my docile cats hiss so much. I don't think my cats liked the TSA.

Transportation Security Administration staff are puzzling over a proposal to reinstate a marketing plan that Southwest Airlines used to feather the nests of SeaWorld Parks in San Antonio, San Diego and Orlando. Before 9/11, the airline would fly a pair of tame penguins owned by the parks to various cities as a promotional gimmick. Giving the flightless birds a lift lured business to the parks, and passengers enjoyed having them on board. The TSA just wants to make sure they're not hiding anything under those little tuxes, according to Southwest spokeswoman Melanie Jones. "One of the things that they mentioned was, 'Would it be possible that we would be able to wand the animals?'" SeaWorld officials say that wanding won't be a problem because the penguins travel well and are used to being handled, which can't always be said for human passengers.

Ok, maybe it SOUNDS silly, but...


It isn't safe for animals to be sent through the X-ray machines like our carry on bags. They are taken out of their carriers, and their carriers are searched and screened. The living animal goes through the metal detectors like humans.

I mean, if you were a bad guy, wouldn't you hide your bad stuff on an innocent, cute animal, in grandma's cane, or in the diaper of your infant??

I don't think it is ridiculous. Well, except the way penguins waddle, now THAT would have been funny.

Awesome! This should be the new TSA slogan, "we are as efficient as hurding cats"!!!!!

I just saw on the tv show Airline where Southwest took 2 penguins on a trip. (they didn't show any TSA dealings on that segment though)
