From the NASA Astronaut recruitment website. Civilians will get paid at the GS-11 through 13 rate ($45239-83819); while the military will pay the current rank the individual currently has (For a Major-Colonel, you're looking at someone making in the range of $75000-95000 per year). So, exept for the fact that these guys and gals just did 204 orbits travelling several million miles-- their pay is much worse than the average Captain flying with a Legacy or LCC carrier. Makes you rethink your place in or should I say, out of this world!!! That E-190 pay isn't looking that bad now!!!

Wrong, sorry to tell you, but the Pilot hand flys the orbiter all the way around the HAC ( heading alignment circle) and all the way to touch down....the orbiter has the full landing capability however.

I was browsing through crew bios on the NASA site one day and it seemed to be two missions. By their third mission they were CDR.

I saw one of thoes NASA guys in IAH the other day with spikey gel hair, a backpack and iPOD. He was talking on his cell while the orbiter was being pushed back. Darn NASA puppy mill Astronauts.

I mean look at these work rules. Two weeks on duty and they never got a hotel. Sleeping on the aircraft and no seperate utilities for different sexes. This is WAY below industry standanrd.

I'll bet they dont need a crashpad though!

Those guys must indeed be SCABs -- they fly backside of the clock every day and never call in fatigued. It would be so easy: "Uh, Houston, you're coming in scratchy, the solar wind is blowing a gale, can't hear you, try again in eight hours."

The astronauts have a good 'union' at NASA. They have never certified the autoland feature on the orbiter, get to hand fly docking to the space station and are paid salary instead of by task -- all different from the Russians. And ever since the 'skylab strike' have had a virtual veto over all work rules. But they had to go on strike to make the change. Sounds kind of like pilots anywhere.

OK, maybe their union isn't so good. No KTIX domicile -- all based out of KEFD and commute to KX68, sometimes the trip ends and have to commute back from KEDW. And no jumpseat, have to fly yourself on the commute in AF surplus 2-seater (T-38).
