The Republican Airline Pilot; an inherent paradox?

This posts’ intent is to promote discussion and thought.

The common argument for the republican airline pilot (RAP) is “I’m more concerned with keeping the USA secure rather than my job.”

Such a general argument seems more a stereotype than anything else. However, here is real rub and some concentrated examples to emphasize the point.

A RAP is like an abortion doctor supporting the anti abortion movement.
A RAP is like an anti capitalist punishment type working as a gas chamber operator.

Ok you get the point. So here is the punch line. If you don’t support your airline career for yourself and (just as importantly) for all airline pilots, then why continue to be an airline pilot? If you want the best opportunities, return on investment and the most for least, then why have a career that you don’t politically support? (a basic understanding that politics is very significant is needed. Almost everything that happens begins and ends in Wash DC.)

Instead, find a career that your politics support, and allow pro career airline pilots to champion their cause. (support means, voting for politicians who champion your issues, and/or supporting legislation that benefits your cause and giving money to PACs that support your issue.)

Being a RAP’er is an inherent contradiction, a conflict and it weakens the career airline pilot efforts to improve his quality of life for himself and his wife and children. The black and white argument is not realistic and reasonable, which is, “no sense in having job security, a Benz and a 5000 sq ft. house if we are hit by a dirty bomb.” Politics and the real world simply aren’t that simple.

How does one rationally and logically justify being a republican airline pilot? (looking for understanding here, not trying to flame or make personal attacks)

Pretty strong stuff, however, let’s debate this, get it out in the open and ultimately understand it.

I'll say it before the arch-conservatives on this board have a chance ...

You good-for-nothing, unpatriotic, flag-burning, commie, Jane Fonda-lovin', socialist, dirt-bag, high-taxation, money-stealin', wussie gun-hatin', New Deal lovin', entitlement-hungry, welfare-mom lovin, big-spending Clinton Lover!!

There, it's over and done with. Now for rational debate ......

I think we really should vote for our country first. Voting simply along what's best for your profession is a little short-sighted and selfish.

That being said, I sincerely believe in the moderate-to-slightly-liberal ideal of less legislated morality, international consensus before going to war, fiscal conservatism, and civil liberties.

I vote Democrat because of my ideals, not because of my profession.

You took the words right out of my mouth! :) (but you forgot affirmative action)

Seriously, the flip side of this argument would be that a Democratic Airline Pilot could not be a patriotic citizen.

Although I firmly believe Churchill when he said that "if you are not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart - and if you are not a conservative by the time you have grown older, you have no brain." is absolutely correct; there are quite a few liberals whose patriotism I don't doubt for a minute.

Found and taken from another message board...

Who are the Airline Pilots?

Different from military pilots, who have chosen to sacrifice to serve country.

Airline pilots are not in service of their country. They are not bound by patriotism, honor and sacrifice. If they are to be, then so should the companies that employ them.

Airline pilots are a labor group performing a duty to help their companies prosper and provide for their families.

In the first place, you contradict yourself so many times it's difficult to know where to start. Although you have no problem stating that an Airline Pilot CANNOT be a Republican, you say that "Politics and the real world simply aren't that simple." Well, Sherlock, there's your answer. It ain't that simple.

What will an Airline Pilot DO with the money he earns? You ask "If you want the best opportunities, return on investment, ...?" Well? Does a Senator that always votes in favor of organized labor ALSO always vote in favor of fiscal and economic policies that will ALLOW me to get the best return on my investment?

You are correct about saying that a Republican is an "anti capitalist punishment" guy. Why should capitalists be punished? Isn't our country, our economy founded on the principals of capitalism and free enterprise? Why should we punish the very core of our economy? (And what does that have to do with operating a gas chamber?)

:)

Oh, and I believe the cliche is "All politics is local" - - not "Almost everything that happens begins and ends in Wash DC."

Airline pilots are a labor group performing a duty to help their companies prosper and provide for their families.

Then why would you not want to cut taxes in order to spur economic growth? This would go further to insure the prosperity of your airline than your precious contract.

In my experience organized pilots that vote Democrat because Dems support labor are nothing more than hogs trying to squeeze others away from the trough.

They do not innovate nor even look for ways to grow the size of the trough, or find ways to get more food into it, because then someone might try to eat their protected morsel.

You might do well to study economics and understand that the drivers of real wage growth in this country are rises in productivity. What do airline pilots do on a daily basis to raise productvity? Unless you can answer that one, then the job is doomed to stagnant wages. You may be able to use unions to force wages higher in the short run, but in the long run, they are doomed to go lower in real terms, and that is what we are seeing today.

I'm an ex-mil RAP and darn proud of it!

1. This argument implies that military pilots have no business becoming airline pilots. What total BS. In fact, many airline pilots are both, as they continue to proudly serve their country in the Guard or Reserves.

2. Pro-business or pro-union. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive, unless you conisder the job of the union is to destroy the business, or vice versa. I think there is room for balance with both. Many airline pilots may endure a union because they have no other choice, but how many would do so if they were treated so well by their companies that they didn't need a union.

3. There are far too many issues in politics to vote Rep or Dem based on union membership alone. Abortion and gun control are similar "devisive" issues. Why would you vote for a party or candidate that only represents 10% of your position? Wouldn't you rather vote for somebody who represents 90% of your views? People are different and you just can't please all of them all the time. If you could, politics would be easy.

I think we really should vote for our country first. Voting simply along what's best for your profession is a little short-sighted and selfish.

Boy, I sure wish we could get Congress to this too!

I think it was Thomas Jefferson who said "politics should never be allowed to become a profession".

Well, nowadays it seems like most in politics will vote or push issues to get themselves re-elected. In many cases most certainly do not seem to comply with their perceived convictions. Even Bush is doing it..do you think he REALLY wants to legalize all the illegal aliens?? Heck no, election times a comin' !!!

Pick your poison

Both parties seem to be against what is in the best interest for America. It's all about "me" and staying in power/control. The Dems are on a direct flight to Hades while the Reps are connecting through ATL (no offense to DL or FL folks).
