The take from Brett Snyder of bnet.com. Welcome to our nightmare.

If you’re looking for a model for a dysfunctional pilot group, you should look no further than the US Airline Pilots Association (USAPA). That union represents the combined US Airways (US East) and America West (US West) pilot groups, but its existence has been marred by constant fighting between the two sides. Now, the US East pilots have tired of fighting others and have no turned on each other. This is an absolutely miserable situation.

The USAPA was formed after the US East pilots decided they didn’t like the results of seniority arbitration (the Nicolau Award). So, they decided to toss ALPA off the property and create the USAPA, an independent union. The US West pilots couldn’t do anything to stop them because the US East pilots had the majority. You can read more about the US Airways/America West pilot fight in a previous post.

Since the USAPA took over, their behavior has become increasingly questionable. In regards to the company, it appears their goal is to oppose anything management supports regardless of whether it is good or bad for them. That’s the only way I can explain their opposition to the slot swap with Delta in New York and Washington. Their latest efforts have been against closing down the Las Vegas hub. Ok.

But now, the union has really lost it. There is now a ton of infighting going on within the US East pilot ranks and things are getting very ugly. USAPA Executive Vice President Dave Ciabattoni turned in his resignation from the organization’s leadership team before Christmas. In it, Dave, a US East pilot, states:
I must be blunt here: the mutation of USAPA from a democratic, line pilot oriented and controlled union into the current administration that is about enrichment and ease of life style for President Cleary and his supporters is nearly complete and in record time.
All of these players are US East pilots. In the new year, Dave gave more of an explanation about what his problems were with the team. He details a variety of problems with the leadership, in particular, President Mike Cleary. He makes accusations of violation of bylaws, misappropriation of money, and favoritism. It’s a compelling read and it begs a single question . . . what is wrong with these people? This is a union that continues to hold fast, refusing to budge on its stubborn position on the Nicolau Award despite court rulings against them. The US West pilots have been alienated from the beginning, yet it’s the US East pilots who are in worse shape. The company offered to bring US East pilots up to the US West contract in the beginning but they have held out. Now, they’ve foregone higher wages for years and there doesn’t appear to be any end in sight.

This has to be the most dysfunctional union around.

Finally you just realized that USAPA leadership is wrong since the beginning two years ago. Now you understand the whole MEOYO (whole s**t) the union/leadership are heading to. (Violation of bylaws, misappropriation of money, and favoritism) You are welcome to fight and defeat Mr. Cleary Mafia and move forward east/west together. Integrity Matters.

I see the frustration growing with the current leadership. A recent resignation from the inner circle is certainly an indication of the dissatisfaction.

I'm ready to move forward if I get represented fairly by the leadership of USAPA.
I am a member in good standing after all.

West propoganda mouthpiece. BFD> the problem with all of this mess is the west greed. NOt even Northwest pilots got hosed as bad as we did!

You got what you brought to this mess. Dougweiser saves all your asses and you think you're owed the world? Spare me the whining, nobody gives a sh** how much you think you were "wronged".

Ciabattoni = "inner circle"? That's pretty funny. Ignorant, too. Dave was a complete misfit in that group. That he threw a tantrum and took his marbles and went home is no surprise whatsoever.

Dysfunctional?

Are you guys kidding me? Try APA.

We make these guys look like Luke Skywalker after he defeated the Emperor and created peace in universe for 10,000 years.

It's tough being a SkynAAzi. It's like it's March of 1945 in Berlin.:crying:

Cactusboy, you sound like a Christian Taliban. Bet you are looking forward being part of the Bedford congregation. He is a bible thumper just like you Dave.

Sorry, my mistake. President Cleary is the inner circle and everyone else is a potted plant.

USAPA is dysfunctional because it wasn't founded on any unifying principle. USAPA was spawned as an organization that would allow an abusive majority to steal the seniority rights of a minority group. There's no principled leadership, or principled followership at USAPA, just a mob.

So, I guess you guys are under the impression that Cleary has no support? Interesting opinion. Totally non-factual. But I know how you Internet dwellers don't let little things like truth get in your way

Of course Cleary has support, refer to FDJ2's post just above yours.

Thank's M, I'll take that as a compliment. I am unfamiliar with "the Bedford Congregation".

I have cut back my posts on this and one other site because there are a handful of east sympathetic people that simply can not be instructed on how this process goes and ultimately how it will end. These people don't care of the damage done or the price that will have to be paid.

Our group would have preferred to see us take the path of the NW/DAL merger process. Talk about a valuable lesson.

I guess our two groups will just have to wait for the ninth's decision, and then move on from there. I'll see you in PHL or CLT sometime before the end of this decade (unless of course the Mayan's were right and the world ends in 2012). Have a great evening!

Boy are these babies(easties) going to be pissed when mommy(courts) spanks their behinds because they don't know how to share. If you retards ever want a new contract it's the NIC baby.

:puke:TEAMSTERS RULES!!!! ha.....

.....not really.

By the title, I thought this thread might have been about IBT 747. The poster child for dysfunctional... Oh well, good luck!

News flash... USAPA only exists to keep the west from seniority. No East cares how dysfunctional USAPA may be.

The next step will be for the East to dissolve the union if it would seem that West could win in court.

I know it was tough for you guys. All of the sudden your airline was saved and you had the prospect of stapling 1800 pilots under you. Finally you could tell yourself staying at US Air wasn't a horrendous mistake, you weren't a loser after all. Then that senile old fool Nic gave you a dose of reality. Boo hoo ho ho hoooo:bawling:

I guess I found a Cleary supporter. But who's counting?
