My fellow aviators,

The following is my first post, so please bear with me. I am a 70 year old retired airline pilot who had the fortune of having a long, established, and relatively stable flying career that brought me much joy and satisfaction. I like to think that I may have some valuable insight to contribute to the "conversations" that occur on this web site.

I assure you that I wholeheartedly embrace the concept that everyone is entitled to their opinions. I am not trying to discredit anyone's thoughts or viewpoints.

Having addressed this principle, I feel compelled to state that a frequent FlightInfo poster's autobiography on the Jet Careers website to be rather offensive and misleading. In the airline business, it is imperative that a pilot makes a concerted effort to show humility and grace, especially when interacting with his colleagues. Although I think this young man showed tremendous courage in posting his brief and uneventful career saga on the Internet for the world to see, it is my impression that his intentions were to boast of his good fortune rather than to truly inspire.

I am certainly glad this young man was able to find success at such a young age. He may very well deserve it. However, I hope he realizes that the flaunting of his abbreviated career path will aggravate many of his colleagues. The majority of pilots work longer and harder, flying in less than ideal conditions to obtain their goal of flying for an airline.

Of course, once in a while, someone will get a break such as this young man did and be able to take advantage of an opportunity. We all know this happens. Yet to any pilot who had more experience than this poster when he was first hired at an airline (which is nearly every pilot out there), the Jet Careers piece can easily be construed as a slap in the face. The subject should be thankful that he was in the right place in the right time, but for his own benefit, should try to keep his good fortune to himself out of respect for other pilots who haven’t had the same opportunities.

One day, this young man will become a captain, and when he does, he will have the responsibility of earning the respect of his co-pilots. It is very probable that his co-pilots will have more experience than him, especially in today’s industry with many furloughed pilots from the majors now flying for the regionals. During my career, I often flew with gentlemen who had worked for four (or more) different airlines and had much more experience than myself. These individuals certainly did not want to hear about my good fortunes in a business that hadn't been so kind to them.

To this young man, I wish you the best in your career endeavors. Please just keep in mind that humility and integrity are two of the most important virtues a man can possess. I urge you to keep this concept in mind as your career progresses. This business is a small enough community where it can be very damaging to have a negative reputation following you around.

Thank you to everybody for reading. I wish you all the best in this unpredictable and volatile business.

Dear sir,

I admire YOUR post, however if it was in true good intent why coulnd't you have just private messaged him instead of making THIS a public whipping?

And now that I take a closer look, you just registered and have one posting. Most 70 yar olds that I know are from an era where they don't want to go near a computer let alone sign on the internet and register for a forum and make a post like this. I smell fish!

I could not possibly disagree more strongly, without doing it in person.

And yes ... I think Royal nailed it. Flame bait.

I have to agree, this smells fishy. I've never heard a pilot with so much experience use the recently adopted term "regionals", for example. Additionally, I've never known a retired (for at least 10 years) airline pilot who would waste his time perusing aviation message boards to critique regional newhires. I apologize for my skepticism, but considering the anonymous nature of these boards, you can surely understand our doubt. If you'd like to be taken seriously, why not give us some details of your distinguished background that might be verified, such as a company, some aircraft types, years worked...anything that might lend some credibility to your statements.

Who cares who he is or what his background is. He makes a very good point. Some of you can't see the messages in people's writing because you're so caught up in talking sh!t about everyone all the time.

What the heII is this guy talking about???? I dont even see anything on the jet careers website other than doug taylor. How is this guy associating fly chicaga with that website?

I just reread the thing and i didn't find it all that bad. A similar article from a gulfstream PFT guy i could understant the bitterness...but i find the things on that site interesting. I would like to post my story too, but i feel it is too far from being complete. Who wants to read about a 1900 driver when there are Rj guys and UPS guys on there. The part about comparing the rj to the saab rubbed me the wrong way a little...of course i am a 1900 driver hoping to switch over to the saab 340 sometime this year. Jets are far far away for me! ha. I don't think i would talk about that story if i were him unless i was asked by someone. Plenty of guys out there that don't want to hear it. Basically most people still in slow turboprops that go to 10 of the same cities every week. In my case....2 cities.
He did do the internship....they hired a guy they knew they would get along with based on their experiences with him.

This is Fly Chicaga's story. I don't think there's a thing wrong with publishing that info. Sure it may seem like he had everything handed to him, but he's a college grad, earned a CFI certificate, passed his 121 PC's, and did an internship. Those are respectable accomplishments and they read about like the resume of any regional FO. Sure, he climbed the ladder a little bit faster, but any of us would have done the same given the opportunity. Just why everyone on this message board is so obsessed with criticizing his story, I don't understand.

There are 16 perspectives on there, but for some reason this one person (FCNelson, now GLD Direct?) seems to have a hard-on for me.

I think it's quite humorous. You got me dude! You saw right through me! It was all for the big monetary payoffs, parties in my favor, and most importantly the chicks!! You betcha!!

*sniff-sniff* I smell a troll.

Are we to believe a 70-year-old guy has been reading these boards and was suddenly compelled to post? Uhh... no.

Nice try. Next time try to be a "60-year-old recently retired United captain." It sounds more real.

What a lesson for the next fellow who has the crazy idea of writing a very, very dorky "look at me mommy" testimonial....

This has to be very embarassing.

Let it rest and leave the poor fellow alone. He has paid.

I have been reading all the posts about FlyChicaga and have been trying to stay out of it, but I suppose that isn't going to happen. His perspectives article is just that, a perspective. He never said that he was better than anyone else or that he feels like things should be handed to him. All the article does is to tell how he got to where he is. For the people who read it, you can enjoy it, laugh at it or like the many people on here b!tch and moan about it. One thing though that should not happen is to personally attack him, c'mon thats just a little childish, don't you think? I believe that its [the article] main goal is to illustrate one of the many ways to achieve a goal. A lot of aviation is being at the right place at the right time, he was but he also worked to make his opportunites happen.

ok after reading your post on the website.......Uhhhhhhhhh What is so bad with that post? You just say how your road to the airlines went. What was so wrong with that?

You should have also mentioned not to PFT and your report would have gotten 10 stars :)

I dont understand why the "70 year old" is pointing a finger at Fly Chicaga

Well that wasn't very nice. What does he have to be embarrassed about? I think he was brave to post it. It was well done too. How many of us are considering what we would write but just won't do it? We all have a story. I think he was just trying to help others. It's excellent for people at the student and CFI level trying to figure out what the end will look like.

Lesson

Wether or not this was a genuine person or not, what he said has a lot of
truth. I am sure we all have stories of the rich kid kind. I was jumpseating
and the F/O was telling me that he was offered a job flying a prop and
told them to shove it. Did i miss something? Is there something wrong with
flying a prop? The CPT was just shaking his head in disbelief. Maybe in training
Humility should be a required topic. Flame or not it the first post was
dead on.

Anus, is that you, good ole' girl?
I see that you are still having those erotic fantasies wishing I was a woman. You're actually becoming like a stalker... constantly looking for me, and wanting my attention. I've been keeping my comments from you because you seem to occasionaly cross the line between internet fun, and cyber psychotic spasms....... more and more unfortunately.

I think you are reading my mind Vlad. Anus has been "missing" quite some time now.
I guess there's nothing on The Lifestyles Channel tonight for you to watch huh?? Did your boyfriend call you and you two decided to log on Flightinfo looking for me. LOL!

I haven't posted regarding the topic of this thread because the original poster is as phony as both of your heterosexuality..... only at least the poster tries to be intellectual.

Not in my head.... but I'm glad to see that my assessment of your irrational delusions was dead on. ... scary....

BTW - Your imagination is the only way you can live.... because you're too much of an emotional nutbag, compounded by the realization that you are actually an inexperienced loser to have a real job making any real money..... and meet real people. LOL!!

Gotta go.... I certainly don't want to keep feeding that psychotic fantasy land in your head..... because I'll wake up tomorrow and there you are on CNN shooting people from a rooftop.....

HERE WE GO AGAIN WOOHOOOOOOO!

PS, I too am a 70 year old airline captain.

I wonder if you would say the same thing if Fly Chicaga was a girl. You guys would be all over the "non deserving" girl....blah blah blah

Also, for the record, I know Fly Chicaga and he is a nice guy

Well, too bad I couldn't add to this thread while it was hot as I just finished my penalty box time. Obviously FlyChicaga has a lot of internet friends.....

Everybody needs to lighten up. Can't we all just get along? I reallly get a kick out o f reading the forums when I've had a few. It's just alot funnier that way.

Dude, what's up with your Avatar? It looks like someone's holding their tool in their hand and they're like making stars come out of it or something. Whats up with that???

I used to go up on the roof with a kegger and throw snowballs at the people walking by....AWESOME!!!---When you go to school up North, its the thing to do. Dude, you're like kind of bitter. Bad Kharma!

You need to take a chill, have a few brew pops, old timer. Just cause your old, doesn't mean you cant have a good time.

Dude, from now on, I'm gonna call you POPS. Maybe I can get you to mellow out a little. I'm thinkin you've been around the block a few times, but if you don't calm down, you're gonna burst!

I don't see the problem with his story. He did an internship and he got a huge break because of it. Internships have their benefits, and the CHANCE of getting hired is a big one.
