well i was non-revving out of SFO monday....and theres new rules in effect specifying only 1 layer of clothing be worn.....so now you remove all outer jackets...and as they all told me as i passsed through SFO.....shoes too no matter what kind they are. upon asking, I was told "there are no longer any exceptions that you may have had in the past"

so this puts a stink in my brain, as I bought these good lookin non-metallic shoes 10 months ago specifically for the purpose of never having to remove them at work, and looking good while walking through the metal-detector (not that theres any chance of that happening)

were they just absolutely stupid and mis-interepreted the rule? or do we all now have to remove the shoes regardless? (ill find out more tomorrow i guess when i go back to work)

I was told the exact same thing going through SLC the other day.

speaking of sandals....ever see someone with sandals beep...sit down take them off and get their bare feet wanded?

....its happened.....

Yes, I've had it happen to me in LAS. Wearing skimpy sandals, I beeped going through. They took my shoes off and wanded my bare feet. I always wondered if they thought maybe I had surgically implanted a weapon into my foot or something.

I went thru EWR on Friday and kept my shoes on, while women with sandals had to take theirs off.
I went through EWR yesterday, had to remove my gym shoes... New TSA rules went into effect yesterday... Looks like shoes off from here on out...

man. what a way to kill off a market boom of shoe sales to pilots.

From TSA web site concerning the rules.

You to remove ALL coats and place them in the X-ray. This includes suit and sport coats, athletic warm-up jackets, and blazers. If the coat or jacket is used as the innermost layer of clothing, you do not need to remove it.

You are NOT REQUIRED to remove your shoes before you enter the walk-through metal detector. However, TSA screeners may encourage you to remove them before entering the metal detector as many types of footwear will require additional screening even if the metal detector DOES NOT alarm.

RNO yesterday...I asked the TSA agent if I should remove my shoes, and he said no. Those air "airport friendly." His words, not mine.

That was yesterday. I didn't ask about the jacket. I just took it off anyway.

I would ask for a supervisor and have them show it to me in writing. The last thing I want to do is walk around without shoes on in an airport. We have to deal with expensive fuel, cheap tickets and now toe-jam!

What about Diabetics feet???

Ya know, I understand the concern to a degree, but what abiut those of us with diabetes and have to be exceptionally careful that our feet are not injured??? even a minor break i the skin can cause serious infections....whos going to pick up this tab???? they better address this quickly...it not like you walk a few feet then put your shoes back on.....I have had to walk over hard uncarpeted surfaces and around equipment and other luggage before I frisked.....

Doctors have warned for years to NEVER go bare footed if your a diabetic.....what will the TSA do about this....

Yup you even need to remove your airport friendly shoes these days when asked. I was passing through the other day and the friendly TSA asked me to take my shoes off, I said “but these are my TSA shoes there’s no metal shank” he said “Ok” so I passed through the metal detector without setting anything off, but still had the “friendly” TSA point me through the secondary screening, so they could “bomb sniff” my stinky shoes.

While sitting there getting “bomb sniffed” I noticed that everybody that did not take there shoes off was getting “randomly selected” for the secondary screen.

It probably has to do with the local TSA chief's interpretation of what needs to be done.

This just shows how moronic and foolish the security is.

I was asked to "voluntarily" remove my shoes, refused walked through without beeping and then was asked to remove my shoes, which I did (without complaining) and then was hand wanded where it beeps on my shoes, belt, zippers, etc. The only reason I refused to take them off the first time is I figure I might as well take the chance of getting through without taking them off. I figure I am going to waste my time 100% if I take them off the first time and in the long run I will save myself some time. Why make it "voluntary" if by refusing you get extra screening?

Another story.

Flew into Piedmont Hawthorne at IAD last week M-F during normal business hours. Got some security pass and some moron looks at my ID's. Come back on a Saturday or Sunday and no security at all. I guess terrorists don't work on weekends or over time.

Had the same thing happen to me a few months back. Went through security at DTW with shoes on, no problems. Then went through security at ABE to return to DTW, and was told by the TSA goon "You might want to take your shoes off...they could set off the detector." So I know my shoes don't set off metal detectors...precisely why I wear them, so I don't get hassled. So, I tell them "Nah, that's ok." It's voluntary isn't it??? Go through the dector, nothing. Get waved over to the side for more screening, and have to take my shoes off...great.

I had a word with them after that, and told them "Hey if you want people to take their shoes off, just say so. Don't act like it's voluntary."

Moral of the story...you can take your shoes off now and save the hassle, or take them off later...your choice!!!

At what point will we pilots say enough? More absolutely needless harassment that accomplishes nothing. Even after secondary screening, I can STILL fly the airplane into a building, if I so desire. I am either trusted, or I am not trusted. If I am not trusted, then I shouldn't be given complete control of a potential WMD. If I am trusted, I shouldn't be partially strip searched to do so.

WE ARE NOT PASSENGERS!!!!!!! So why are we STILL being screened as passengers?

Do the rampers entering the back door have to remove their shoes?

I talked with a "TSA" sup after refusing to 'voluntarily' take my shoes off and getting the full treatment. He fed a line of bs so thick I wished I had hip-waders. Their outfit is a contactor and basically, yeah, whatever they feel like doing, they do.

And we wonder why people drive for hours to avoid the airlines.

Now the reps want more TSA jobs by screening all GA passengers. This might not happen as the guys that can afford big jets usually donate heavily to both sides of the elections.

Fly SAFE!

Maybe a little off subject, but I'm surprised you guys missed this one...

Man Arrested at LA Airport

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A man was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for having three bullets sewn inside his jacket after he set off a metal detector, authorities said.

Jay Daniel Brown, 39, was taken into custody about 4:10 p.m. Monday and was booked for investigation of possession of dangerous weapons, said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman. Bail was set at $20,000.

Brown set off a metal detector in Terminal 4, where he was planning to board an American Airlines flight to Austin, Texas, Lee said.

No passengers were evacuated from the terminal, authorities said.
There's got to be more to this story than what's printed here...unless the guy had them sewn into his coat a long time ago for another reason and forgot he had them there.

Seems kind of weird....who has bullets sewn into their clothes?

And...I guess the other side is....was he going to spit them at someone or throw them or what? They've got to be moving pretty fast to do any damage, don't they?

Shoes off in CVG

Funny this topic came up. I went MEM - CVG yesterday and no problem but today in CVG. all passengers and Crews had to remove shoes. The lady TSA said that it wa a new rule.. I asked the crew about it and they said over the last week that it is been more and more times they were asked to put shoes through the machine or sent to secondary screening...

I suppose if you duc taped a guys mouth over and stuffed the bullets up the guys nose, it could prove to be fatal.

I guess what I'd be worried about is who had the parts to some sort of a gun hidden in their carry on, or on their person...or hidden on the plane by some person ahead of time. That's what I would want to know.
