TCAS II and RVSM

Gentlemen- Thanks for the responses. I am curious about this reg though:

121.356 Collision Avoidance System.
Effective January 1, 2005, any airplane you operate under this part must be equipped and operated according to the following table:

The table lays out the type and version for aircraft with a gross weight of 33,000 or greater and so on.

The word OPERATED in 121.356 leads me to believe that I cannot depart without an operational TCAS in any circumstance.

Please forgive me if this is an elementary question?

Ultra Runner is correct. You don't need TCAS. If you have TCAS you need Version 7 because it eliminates the "traffic, traffic" call from planes that are only 1,000 feet above/below you.

I agree. I operate a Hawker 700 without TCAS. We fly in RVSM airspace. But I do think some ICAO countries require TCAS in RVSM (not sure), but the US does not.

But yes if you have TCAS, then you must have change 7, otherwise it would scream at you every time you crossed someone at 1000' separation.

Change 7 is just a software upgrade.
