ATA Statement on Human Swine Flu Cases

WASHINGTON, April 24, 2009 – The Air Transport Association of America, (ATA) the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, today commented on the news of human swine flu cases found in Mexico, Texas and California.
“ATA is following closely news about an outbreak of human swine flu in Mexico and whether it is linked to isolated cases of less severe flu in California and Texas. We are in communication with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and look to their public health experts for recommendations on whether any additional measures are needed to prevent spread of the disease by air travel. In the meantime, ATA member airlines will continue to comply with long-standing requirements to report any case of communicable disease on board aircraft flying to or within the United States.
“At this time CDC is not advising U.S. citizens postpone or forgo travel to Mexico, although we understand that they will be issuing an “outbreak notice” to inform travelers and provide reminders about standard and enhanced recommendations for the region.”
For more information, please see the CDC Swine Flu Web Page and Outbreak notices, along with tips for health travel, can be found at CDC Travelers’ Health Page.
ATA airline members and their affiliates transport more than 90 percent of all U.S. airline passenger and cargo traffic. For additional industry information, visit www.airlines.org.

Thank goodness Tilton is heading up the ATA at such an important time!

We will see how this plays out. Was in Mexico last week, and no one seemed really worried about it.

Yes, I hope they are correct, not ignorance is bliss....

Hope this doesn't develop into another "force majuer" event......

I remember the SARS outbreak causing quite a bit of pain to the asian carriers back a few years ago....

I just came back from Chihuahua, and most of the ground and security personnel were wearing masks. I've heard it's more prevalent the farther south one goes.

Heyas,

Swine are a common vector between birds and humans, and can contract both avian and human viruses.

Problem is that the viruses can recombine in an infected pig, and bingo, you have an avian virus that is communicable to humans.

This is why you keep your pigs and birds separate, and why this crap always comes from a third world country.

There is more paranoia and fear to this than it warrants. Like 150 people total, worldwide have died. That is what % of the people on this planet? Like .000000000000000000001 percent?

This makes for good ratings and keeps Sanjay Gupta/CNN's ratings up there.

Hopefully your post will be validated in time. I'm not a germaphobe, but pilots and families will be at an increased risk. It will be interesting to watch.

If you were attending a service academy in 1976 you may already have been vaccinated. The CDC used them as guinea pigs during the swine flu scare of that year and vaccinated the entire student population at the AF academy. There is some data to suggest that the vaccination may still protect you from it.

So this Mexican, a bird and a pig are in a bar and the pig winks and asks the bird, what do you call a Mexican with a rubber toe?

The bird says, I dunno.

Roberto gets up and walks out of the bar.

I wouldn't be surprized if the source of the swine virus won't be traced back to Tilton and Wacker Drive.

I'm sure other viruses have been.

The media loves to stir us into a panic about anything-just look at the economy headlines, this swine flu, sars, etc...

One thing that separates the Swine virus from the Avian Flu, is that the Swine Flu is able to be passed from human to human, whereas the Avian Flu was not passed this way.

I agree about the media. Most of the news segments show people wearing face masks, etc.

Unfortunately for our profession, the adverse effect may already be starting.

The EU (as well as other countries) have made official statements urging a stop to all "non-essential" travel to the US and Mexico (some countries add Canada).

The World Health Organization is holding an emergency meeting/press conference right now, I believe, that was originally slated for tomorrow. Most signs point to increasing the health "threat" level to 4 or possibly 5. Not good for air travel if it happens.

I am starting to smell force-manure...

...and isn't it just like this industry to trip and fall just after getting up on it's feet again? Man, if it wasn't for SARS, the oil prices, the economy and now the Swine Flu-- and of course the Jetblues (had to throw that in cause you know someone is going to bring it up) the airline industry might actually be thriving!!!

I don't think thriving American industries are part, or have been part, of the "plan" in this country for a long time. We are in the midst of a long-term secular decline of anything industrial, or anything having to do with infrastructure, or middle to upper-middle class prosperity. There will bo no prosperity for the middle/upper middle class until the industrial base in this country is restored.

Since this may have had it's origin in Mexico, does anyone think this will help step up the border patrol operations to prevent illegals from coming into the US for treatment or further restrict their otherwise normal movments into our Country?

Hah! The new DHS head doesn't even think it's a crime to enter the US illegally. Thinks it's a civil matter. We don't have a prayer of stopping anyone at the border.

Ditto what Col Savage said, don't think for a moment this country can live on a society of health care professionals and peace corp volunteers. Until we start making stuff people want, we're toast as a country.

Our only hope of stoping the Mexicans/ect. from flooding over the border is,,, Well ever see the scene from Independance Day where Jeff Goldblum (David) gets drunk and starts trashing "area 51"? "Maybe if we trash this place bad enough the aliens won't want it...." (may not be word for word) Well that's about the only way we have of stopping the flood here. Do I support things like no undocumented welfare, schooling, medical treatment? Yes, will it ultimately matter? Probably not. Will the collapse of our economy matter? You bet.

Thanks, My Lord (Vader)...We've become a financial based economy, and have gone from making things to making deals and "packaging assets" for sale with no regard for the fundamentals or the people involved. It's all about shuffling money around, disguising ownership of assetts under shell corporations, and pounding the daylights out of labor to show 'em the money men are boss.

........... on a brighter note Southwest Airlines announced today a distribution agreement with Volaris so you can buy your Mexican destinations on Southwest.com.

Friggin' idiots. Talk about timing.

Gup
