For those of you who have read the November 1 Reporting Point, you probably have questions concerning the “Hiring and Manning Forecast” table. This forecast was generated by the SWAPA Scheduling Committee in order to capture your attention concerning the possible effects that increased Open Time would have on hiring for 2004. The table reflects the possibility of hiring new pilots that will actively fly on the line by the end of 2004. Many of you have heard rumors that we’re suppose to hire
up to 500 pilots in 2004. As expected, this contradiction has caught the interest of many. We did a poor job of explaining the chart.

The chart we published indicated that we do not need any pilots until June and then we needed 60 pilots in June 2004, and more for the rest of the year. In order to have 60 pilots on line in June the company must start new hire classes in February. There is a 3-4 month lead time associated with the training pipeline. Additionally the chart did not reflect the new hires late in 2004 to account for the early 2005 aircraft delivery schedule, nor did it account for the additional aircraft deliveries announced in late October.

Our forecast is very similar to the company forecast and the news is good. Once they start hiring there will be a virtually continuous flow of new hires for years.

Dudes, I wish all of you the best...

But when I was schmoozing Delta back in 99-00, the word was "60 a month FOREVER"...right out of Plato II's hole.

I think SWA will grow and prosper. Beware the "we are hiring forever" matra, however. Methinks its bad karma.

From Southwest's VP of OPs, Greg Crum,

We are still forecasting to hire 400 next Year.

10 in January
24 a month to June.
20 a month to the end of the year.

I know this doesn't add up to 400. These are the classes that are planned for now. Historically this is how its always been done around here. The remaining classes will be timed subject to aircraft deliveries. Obviously we will be running most months with two classses.

The article in the Reporting Point had other intentions than hiring forecasts but did not come off that way. It did upset many pilots around here. And rightfully so.

Dude:cool:

Good Point. I would rather hear something like "We will hire X number of pilots per new aircraft, on average, and replace for retirements."

That way if deliveries or retirements vary year to year you can keep up with hiring trends.

I'm glad ATA also supplies good hiring numbers. BTW,
ATA is continuing to hire into '04 but I don't know how many yet. We hired over 200 in '03. That's pretty good at an airline our size.
