I have worked for a regional for several years as a turbo prop Captain and would like to work for SWA. Short of getting the type rating ahead of time, does anyone have some honest good advice for getting an interview after filling out an ap? Thank you.

Is a Southwest interview possible without internal recommendations? Trying to decide if I'm willing to gamble a 737 type or not -

Recommendations don't come into play until after the interview. You have to take 3 LORs to the interview but I don't think there is even a place to list people recommending you on the app, just a place to check saying you have/can get 3 LORs (not necessarily from people at SWA just has to be someone who has flown with you). Someone that is currently applying probably knows better since I applied prior to the online app.

I got an interview without internal recs or a type rating. I had about 6300TT with 3200 PIC 121. Of course they only call when you are not very interested. Best way to get an interview would be buy the type. Higher Power talks to SW, so if you did ok I think you would be in good shape.

first third is right

You don't even have the opportunity to have anybody at SWA give you internal recommendations until you have an interview date. Also, as he said, there is a spot on the electronic app saying you can get three written LORs for the interview. After you have an interview date, SWA pilots can see your name and write an internal LOR for you. BTW, at least three out of 11 in my interview group did not have a type rating. I also know several other pilots who got hired without the type rating. Good luck.

Out of the 11 that I interviewed with....3 of us were called to continue...I was the only one with the type that was called to continue. I do not know the numbers though on how many total in my group had the type. I don't think many of them had it.

BTW...I know a lot of people there...including family....and it still took me about 18 months to get the call for an interview.

Good LUCK!!
