Just got my packet for my June 1st class. Says we need a 1st class medical, mine expires in July. As an FO at SWA do you need to carry a 1st class, or can you let it go to 2nd class? I just don't want to have to get one in the middle of training some where.

Thanks

Your 1st class medical must be current on the first day of newhire class. It can then drop to a 2nd class. After that, you'll have to get a 1st class once per year until Captain upgrade. Welcome aboard!

Rams,

That doesn't sound correct based on what I remember from a year ago. But I'm often wrong when I "know" I'm right. I got mine right before class because it was due, anyway.

azxj,

Get the real right answer and call the People Department and ask them. A few guys on the internet can only give you what they think is correct. The People Department knows what is right.

PD told me you need a current first class medical before the start of class. It THEN is good for a year because you are an FO. However, the second six months it's classed as a second class. Therefore you need to have a first class medical given at least 6 months before class.
