That is the latest rumor. Heard the other day that SWA will buy AWA. Call off the merger, let US Air die, and sell off the portions of AWA that don't fit the SWA model. Take the proceeds from the sold assets and pay off the old AWA debt. They would own PHX, LAS, PHL, CLT and others if US Air dies and they had AWA's gates, etc.

Sounds like a realistic rumor to me?????????????????????????????????????

Personnel won't be an issue with a buy out. They would interview and hire the folks they wanted. It wouldn't work like a merger.

I kinda like this rumor...

It's almost like getting 2 airlines for the price of one...pay for AWA, which causes USAir to die off, then they jump in and take over their routes. Now you have SWA doing the flying of all 3 airlines. Sounds like a slick business plan to me. I'm interested to see what comes of it.
 
Not that I believe the rumor, and I don't, but federal regulators wouldn't allow such an acquisition because of the effective monopolization of LAS and PHX.
 
Great rumor! I don't think there is a shred of truth, so I'll be spreading this one every chance I get!

Kind of like the effective monopolization of MDW????
 
What difference does being in Chapter 11 make?

The first plan (which I was against) called for Air Tran to take over ATA's operation in MDW, and Air Tran would not have been in any way associated with SWA. There would have been competition, not monopolization.

Now SWA takes over half of ATA's gates, and sure-as-shootin' seems to be calling the shots down in IND. SWA is code sharing on all of ATA's flights out of MDW except for DFW, and ATA is code sharing onto most if not all of SWA's flights out of MDW. SWA gave DIP$$$ to ATA, and when (IF) ATA comes out of CH11 SWA will be @28% owner of ATA, with each others codes on most flights.

So how is that not a monopolization??
