SWA adding onto Headquarters!!

"The project, which will result in the building of a five-story addition next to the current five-story portion of Headquarters, will be completed early next year.
While strictly controlling costs is still Southwest’s highest priority, moving forward with this previously planned expansion is necessary to provide some much-needed room for a number of new and/or growing departments, including Technology, Inflight Training, Dispatch, and Interactive Marketing. These Teams provide a critical support role for our Company. By giving them the space they need to work effectively, they will be better able to serve our operations in the field and, in turn, our Customers.
To illustrate the extent of our growth at HDQ over the past 13-plus years, consider: When we cut the ribbon on our current HDQ facility (which only consisted of one, three-story building) in April of 1990, Southwest had a general office staff of approximately 600, with only 7,800 Employees Systemwide and just under 100 aircraft in our fleet.
When we announced we would begin construction on a 300,000-square-foot addition to HDQ six and a half years later (in December 1996), we had grown to nearly 23,000 Employees Systemwide, with more than 1,100 at Headquarters and a fleet of 243 Boeing 737s. Today, we find ourselves with nearly 2,800 HDQ Employees, more than 34,000 Employees Systemwide, and a fleet of 389 aircraft. By the end of this year, our fleet will have grown to 417. All of this points to one thing: As our Company changes, adapts to an evolving industry, and grows, we simply need more room to spread our wings."

Now if they could just get rid of the Wrong er I mean Wright Amendment....well that's another thread. Maybe they'll rename Bachman Lake for Herb........;)
 
It's not to SWA's advantage to get ride of the Wright Amendment...they aren't even fighting it anymore and haven't been for years.

Having it go away means others would move into DAL to compete. Why would we want to compete out of DAL when right now it's all ours.

RJ I was being somewhat sarcastic when I wrote that, I know SWA has been "passionately nuetral" on the issue and that SWA has other fish to fry. Usually the whole issue comes from other sources not SWA the most recent being Legend Airlines pressing the issue during their startup. That whole thing led the DOT to clarify the rule and also led to I believe was the Shelby Amendment that added KS, MS, and AL to the restriction. Of course when the dust settled SWA is still there and COEX is the only other one left.

THe question I have is with the growth around DFW Airport how would SW approach the issue if other LCC were to establish a presence at DFW depsite whatever reponse AA manages against them.

We could probably sit here and discuss this whole issue for a long time, as if it hasn't already been done. Hopefully if I'm lucky enough to join you guys we can discuss it when I'm flying right seat with you from BWI to LAX ;)

If they'd move the training center ANYWHERE in the SWA system except DAL, I'll spearhead the name change.


DAL is absolutely the hardest friggen place I've ever had to get to/from for training.

100 mile drive + 3 different airplanes = 8-12 hours each way.......
 
Well that's the other issue, in my coummuting I've run in to alot of crews coming through HOU to get to DAL for training. That's got to be tough, I know of a few guys living in the DFW area based outside of DAL and HOU. What a commute........What would happen if congress where to add 3 states each year to the restriction? My guess not a whole lot until they got to CA, FL, IL, NV, and MD.
 
Flight Training Expansion Also

What has been mentioned on this site in the past but isn't mentioned in this article is the expansion of the training center from a 6 simulators to what I believe is 4 more simulators plus classrooms. This expansion will begin I believe sometime in late '04 or '05 with the first new sim to arrive in about 18-24 months from now. Doing the math on sims to pilots makes one see the growth for SWA isn't something the company isn't planning for. 4 new sims would equate to over 2500+ pilots over what we have now. That matches up to the announced long range goals of the company to double the number aircraft we have now (389) over the next 7-10 years. This means not only we'll be hiring folks this year but for several years to come assuming no other catastrophic events occur. For those who already meet our requirements this is good. For those who don't meet our requirements this still means there is plenty of time for you to get the competitive numbers you need over the next 2-5 years & make yourself highly competitive for some of those slots down the road.

Don't believe the goal isn't obtainable if you're just a junior birdman. Get to the left seat of a turbine/jet aircraft as quickly as you can. Keep your skills proficient & don't burn any bridges out there. Be smart, don't jeopardize your career goals with legal infractions or FAA violations that can be avoided. Not just SWA but other carriers out there will need pilots for sometime to come & they will come in all shapes & sizes. Good luck.
