Survival school sucks...

Ahh, the good old USAF survival school, what a camping trip with beautiful mountains, complaining butter bars and a slap here and there.

Hey cool guy, someone already beat you to establishing yourself as survival-school badass (see Snakum's post on page 2). Better luck with future threads though.

Nah, I never referred to myself as a badass of any sort, just remembering the good enjoyable time I had, looking back the atmosphere for what it was to me. I didn't ask for your perception of what I was establishing myself as.

Be careful with being a smartass with me, this is the internet, in real life I really doubt that you really would say such a thing to my face.

Why all the fighting about something we all did?

Was it fun - not all of it. Did I learn something - absolutely. But the most important thing I took out of it was the fraternal bond I have with each of you. I made friends for life there that I plan on keeping in touch with forever. When we see each other all over the world and we share stories, all of us have SERE stories that bond us together. More importantly to me though is the glimpse ( a VERY SMALL glimpse) in to what our brothers went through and to me that is priceless. I will forever be grateful to those men who really sacrificed so much. Faith of our fathers gentlemen...you are all my homies!

I attended DA SERE in the dead of winter in the 80's. I was fortunate enough to have a buddy from Ranger School from several years earlier there with me. We were rakin' rocks one fine day when he whispered to me:

"This sucks, this REALLY sucks. I would do Ranger School all over again before I would do this BS again."

I agreed. Looking back, some of the best training I received in the military.

The new guys seem to be saying "Survival school is tough - it will kick your ass!"

Which is true, up to a point.

But everyone who has actually gone through it realizes that you WILL make it through, but you will be changed. The change doesn't come immediately, but it does come.

My advice to all you new guys: just relax and take a deep breath or two. Survival school is a shock to your system, and you need some time to recover. Look back on it one year from now and try to remember the lessons you learned.

I went through Fairchild 13 years ago and I consider it some of the best training I ever had....but it sucked while I was going through. Whatever you do, don't confuse completing training with being an actual hero.....

One last point

I remember how good a Big Mac tasted after SERE. After starving that long, perhaps it was the most enjoyable meal I've ever had.

To those that are going: pay attention, suck it up, enjoy.
To those that have been: it sucked..but consider the alternative to no training!

BTW, I have yet to see anything remotely classified on here. I have seen shos on the military channel that passes more info than has talked about here. Not saying that we should test the waters..but...classified??

Regards Navy SERE, I am far happier that I never had to use the training that I am that I received/underwent the training !! I mean the whole training process was nearly unbearable, could you imagine having to actually use it ... man-o-man, not me ... no thanks.
