Read an article in Poplar Mechanics (was sitting in the FBO) about the future of supersonic corporate jets in development. Article said company in Nevada was planning to have one fly by 2010 and it would have virtually no sonic boom.

Anyone find a link to this company or up-to-date articles on their progress?

google it.....

I searched this recently and found numerous articles with pictures. Go to google and search "supersonic business jet".
Here are some of the results:

I know lockheed has a design, there is a design oversea's with some conglomoration including Dassault and then there is some other Domestic company (my guess is gulfstream).
The pictures are probably the most interesting part. They built some Traingle shaped fin on the tail that dampens the boom by around 50%.
See pics in the articles.

how can you break the sound barrier w/out a sonic boom? that's some freakin' good engineering.

also, i have a question for you guys. once a plane hits Mach 1.0, and there is a sonic boom, does the 'boom' just happen at the point where the plane hit the speed of sound? or does it follow the jet where ever it goes? example, say a jet hits the speed of sound in california and person A hear's the boom. well, person B is in texas and the plane (still going the speed of sound) passes over person B. does person B hear the boom too? or since the plane burst through that Mach 1.0 envelope there's no more booming? lol, i think i've gone crosseyed... :)

The boom continues... As the pressure wave passes that particular point on the ground the boom is encountered...

I've always wondered that myself, thanks for the answer!

I posted the company website a while ago.

There are actually two companies - Aerion and QSST. Aerion is doing a Mach 1.6 design powered by 2 JT8D-219 engines, which will need to be subsonic over land (they claim same fuel efficiency, so range won't be lost), while QSST is contracting Lockheed-Martin to design a Mach 1.8 "Low sonic boom" design (similar to some DARPA work that was done recently, and the experimental F-5 with a low-sonic boom "platypus" nose), that they hope they can get qualified for supersonic flight over land.

Here's QSST's website. They were started by Allan (Gulfstream) Paulson's son, Michael.
