I like my Serengetis. I also liked Oakleys- But more of them ended up at the bottom of a lake to make them worth while to keep buying. I had a set of Ray-Bans, but they brke quick and the costomer servise was crappy. Thats when I went to a $5 pair from the gift shop and had no problems. They unfortunatly broke and I went to Serengeti.

Polorized is bad also because of the heated windscreens. The little wires make it hard to see out of the airplane. You see lots of pretty colors and patterns though.

I don't know if this is true, but it makes perfect sense: I heard that you want to make sure you have UV protection, because without it you'd be worse off than without sunglasses. The idea is that while wearing nothing, your pupils naturally contract to decrease the visible light, and of course consequentially reducing the UV intake. But cheapo non-UV protected sunglasses let your pupils dilate (because they react based on vis. light) and let all the UV batter them.

Yep. I have heard the same thing.... Makes sense.....Good glasses are definately worth the tax write off....

Thanks for all the advice. I think I found a great deal.

I went to the American Optical Sunwear factory store, in Southbridge, MA, yesterday. They had their complete lineup, with any choice of frame size, color, and width. I picked up a pair of the "Original Pilot" sunglasses, which normally retail for about $50, for $18. I should have gotten a spare!

Quillpig,

I have to agree with Colorado, make the investment. This is something you need for work (not just to look cool).

I get a big kick out of some of airline buddies. They would go out for a night on the town and blow to much money on booze, or buying rounds and rounds of drinks to get an FA in bed, then they will tell you they can't rationalize spending a $100 for a pair of shades they will wear on the average of 3-5 hours a day about 12-17 days a month.

I guess it is all perspective! Buy the good stuff and write it OFF

July issue of Flying magazine had an advertisement for Vanquish sunglasses. They offer the sunglasses free, but you pay shipping, handling and a process fee. I can't decide if it's some type of a scam or not.

LOL!

Think it really costs $15 to ship a pair of sunglasses? Why do the nicer pairs cost more to ship?

I've never seen a pair of these in person, though. They might be a good pair of sunglasses for the money.

Check ebay, now and then you can get the ray bans and serengettis new on there for a reasonable price. if you are not worried about having the latest model, most likely you can find older models that are never worn and new for well under new price. As for me, i use an old pair of gargoyle helios' for my flight glasses, about from 1997 the work well for me offer good protection and visibility. I know ive see them on ebay for cheap cheap cheap. Basically though its personal preference.

You can't read EFIS displays with polarized glasses.

I tested this theory today. Collins Efis 85 is easy to read on both sides of the cockpit with polarized shades. FMS (UNS1-m) was ureadable with my head turned sidways....Wait maybe this should be on the "things to do when you are bored" thread.

it must depend upon the efis..

Polarized sunglasses are bad in the brasilia; the digital insets of all the engine gauges are unreadable, and the view through the windshield is like something out of Austin Powers. (This is just in cruise without windshield heat on. turn it on and it gets worse)
