Agree we will never know. That does not mean that their breed could not have done well.

They ran airlines in during Regulation. We'll never know how they would do in today's deregulated environment.

That is a good point. However, I would still be willing to bet that they would do well.

i.e. Steve Jobs has similar characteristics; Passion, intimate industry knowledge, shrewd, business acumen, ability to adapt and even a little underhanded. We all know that Apple is doing nicely in a relatively unregulated environment. I know, apples and oranges, and it doesn't really prove anything. Nevertheless.......

I think that Hughes and Trippe would have adapted to deregulation as adaptation was modus operandi for that era's airline executives.......
