Just wondering what people do to eat cheap and healthy while on a trip?

Peanut Butter sandwiches with low-carb bread and fruit. I can usually get by with only buying one meal a day by doing this.
 
Ditto the PB sandwich, plus Zoneperfect bars are a great meal/snack and are healthier than most, nutri-grain bars work well too.

Lay off the fries and white bread and sugar drinks and you'll lose weight.

I lost 40 pounds and Im incredibly lazy so it ain't that hard to do :)
 
This may sound incredibly gay, but I lost 25 pounds on the Slim Fast plan last year. And since then I still eat the shakes and bars on trips in order to save money. They are cheap as a meal replacement, healthy, and easy to pack. Then I only have to buy one meal a day on the road.
 
Pita bread and canned chicken or tuna. Also the tuna salad packs travel well. Rice cakes and beef jerky are good to take along for munchies. When you have to eat out, eat a salad with lo-cal dressing. I lost about 65 lbs. following wt. watchers at home, and eating like this on the road. Good luck.
 
I don't know if while on a trip one has or has no access to a microwave, but if you do than stuffer's has some pretty good frozen stuff. 1.45 sec in a good microwave abd you are ready to eat and it takes little space. They taste pretty good too for frozen food. You can carry it along for a day and even if it melts it won't make a mess but stay in the package in an consumable condition as it is mostly solid food. 4 pack goes for $8 in BJ's and each has around 280-380cal. They seem to be not enough at first but after a week you get used to the portions and you really don't need more.
 
Raid the breakfast bar at the hotel in the morning and then grab a few apples and banannas for lunch. Figure out which hotel has the best free happy hour food for dinner and go there. Crash the wedding reception or corporate affair where no one knows anybody else and chow down. If you don't like the food deal at your hotel check out the others nearby.
 
i would grab the little peanut butter packets and eat those as a snack, but then I love PB.

I agree with watching what you eat but use the layover times to work out. that way you can eat what you want and still stay healthy.

McDonald's fruit and yogurt parfait! Get a couple. The fruit is frozen so it stays cold for a couple of hours!
 
Great thread!!

As I get back into line flying, I'm going to go out of my way to eat properly. I didn't bust my ass to lose the 50+ I've lost so far to go back to eating burgers, pizza, and the other traditional junk that comes with the job.
 
Tuna

They come in those sealed packets now, no messy draining involved and they last forever. I always stick a couple in my suitcase for when I can't find a decent meal somewhere. They even have different flavors now.

I have pretty good luck getting a refrigerator at every hotel that I stay at. I pack some fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, black olives, sour cream, salsa, avocado, and pitas and pack them individually in a baggy. I then pack a 2 cup cheese bag and carry it all along with a portable 1lb meat cooked with taco seasoning.

It sounds like alot of work but it is really easy and I'm able to cook about 8 seperate meals for around 14- 18 bucks. The perfect soft-taco kit that will make every crew room drool with a high level of concentrate.

I usually pack some fruit and soup and I'm ususally pretty well set for any four day slammed at me.

I carry things like trail mix, high protein/low carb meal replacement bars etc. Biggest thing is to avoid traditional fast food and soft drinks.

Also, on the overnight get in a run or a trip to the weight room if the hotel has one and you have the time.
 
Ditto on the meal replacement bars. Tri-O-plex is great and it's high in protein. A great non-perishable item. I keep the vaacum packed or small canned tuna/chicken & crackers too. Think high protien! Too many carbs and you are hungry again in an hour. "Homestyle Selections" by Sweet Sue makes dishes like Chicken Marinara in pouches that need no refrigeration.
 
Dinty Moore has decent packaged dinners that are reasonably priced and shelf-stable, so they don't need refrigeration. Things like Salisbury Steak and Turkey & Gravy.

They should change their slogan to two weeks worth of sodium in every can!
 
Eat less. Move more.

I stopped drinking sodas and anything caffeine. I started drinking lots of water. The gut started shrinking and my face came back.
Also, avoid fast food, especially fries, like the plague. Carry tuna packs with you, trail mix, clif bars (great stuff, and they taste good..really!), peanut butter sandwiches and don't eat when bored. It is really hard to find healthy food in the terminals, so why not just not look? Also, it's ok to be hungry a bit during the day. It won't kill ya.

No need for fad diets. You can even keep up the same ole lazy TV and computer habits... but hitting a treadmill for 10-15 minutes a day works really well on top of all the diet adjustments.

I feel a lot better now and don't get tired as fast.

I like your style!!...but...How do you do that with overnight clothes? That stuff is a dead giveaway that we pilots are not part of 'normal' society.

This is also true. However, most of what is easy and available is 80% refined carbs and is not satisfying enough to keep the tummy from rumbling every 45 minutes. Something with a higher protien content WILL stick to your ribs better. The 6 mini meals a day plan also works great. I lost 15 pounds by going high on the protien, cutting out 'white foods' (processed carbs) and snacking on fruit all the time. I was never on Atkins, but the reduction of processed carbs in ones diet and addition of more protien & natural or unprocessed carb foods is certianly more healthy.

Thanks. It's easy....just carry a suit coat that matches your pilot pants and a bow tie for an instant tux. If you talk to anyone ask a lot of questions. If they are on the brides side you're on the other one. Don't give the guests you chit chat with time to ask you questions. Keep them busy talking about themselves. If you get stuck, just excuse yourself to go to the men's room. Oh yeah....if there is a person taking tickets at the door just enter at the loading dock and walk in with the help. Act lost and they'll get you in the back. No one working there will care anyway. Have fun!
