So I have a choice, ExpressJet or American Eagle. All other things aside. I'm wondering which one I'm least likely to get furloughed with. Who's the most stable. It may be impossible to tell. But any input would be nice.

More of a chance of being furloughed at Eagle. RJ deliveries are coming to a screeching halt next summer, and with all the flowbacks from AA coming in...doesn't look good.

You sure about that one? Wasn't XJT about to go on strike recently?

Letter 3 in our contract states,

"No pilot will be furloughed as a result of a furloughed AA pilot displacing into a CJ Captian position."

I wouldn't worry about furloughes here at Eagle, however you will just have to look at the many variables that are important to you. Domiciles, pay, equipment, and everything else. Good luck.

Stability is such a fleeting thing in this economy. Pre 9/11, I would have loved to have worked for ACA. Now I'm glad I'm not (Nothing against you Independence guys and gals. I really hope ya'll make it.)

If growth is any indication of how a company is doing, then I would go with XJT. We hiring a lot and there are all sorts of signs of something big happening here. What that may be is anybody's guess, but something is definitely in the works. Eagle, meanwhile, has cancelled a number of ERJs. Also, we no longer have a flowthrough/flowback agreement with CAL, while Eagle will still receive some AA flowbacks (the actual number may be small, I've heard). On the flip side, our agreement with CAL expires in '07. While I think it will be renewed, there's no guarantee. Then again, there's also talk that AA may want to sell Eagle, so who knows what that could mean.

As far as upgrades, that's like predicting who will win the Superbowl in '09. Right now, I would say that it's going to be alot quicker at XJT, but that can all change tomorrow.

What it boils down to is this: Both companies are as solid as they're going to get in this business. If you have a choice to make, look at domiciles, quality of life, aircraft, etc.

Better yet, just flip a coin.

We've been in contract negotiations since 2002 and are presently voting on a tentative agreement. It's your guess whether it will pass or not. While the pilot group has approved a strike if needed, the National Mediation Board must release us to do so, and they have indicated they will not. With Bush in the White House for another four years, it's doubtful we'll ever go on strike.

I wouldn't let the "threat" of a strike influence your decision.

Wink,

I have a good friend from school at Eagle. He has kicked himself over and over for going there. The upward movement is non-existent. He has been there 5 and 1/2 years and now just barely holds Saab CA in LAX. In ORD as an FO he still couldn't hold weekends off. Prior to 9/11 we had EGL guys quiting left and right to come and work at my present company who had been there for 3+ years. From everything that I have ever heard, I would recommend going to COEX over EGL any day. In no way am I trying to insult the EGL guys, but they seem to always have the lowest morale in the industry. For a while they were having problems filling their new-hire classes. (This is from what EGL crews were telling me in the hotel vans.) The stagnation problems will only get worse (at all airlines) as there has been little to no upward movement due to the lack of hiring in the Majors. You might have to ask yourself how long you could stay in San Juan. If the COEX TA passes, they will have a pretty decent contract. EGL still has years to go on the over-a-decade contract that they signed. Look into the history of why they had to sign that contract and you will get a pretty good picture of why many people there are less than enthusiastic about working there. If you have an opportunity, talk to a few EGL guys, and a few COEX guys. (I am neither by the way) I know that my buddy wishes that he would have done that. But hindsight is always 20/20, and I guess that the grass is often greener on the other side.

Good luck, and be thankful that you are in a position to have a CHOICE! Many people starting off in the industry have only one option. I was lucky enough to be in your situation of having a choice between to carriers. The best advice I can give you is to look at the history of your choice airlines and what is on the property today. In this buisness, you can't count on anything that is "on the way."

Good luck,

Gorditas
