Spirit to offer $9 flights

Spirit Airlines, a Florida-based discount carrier, said Friday it will offer fares as low as $9 when it inaugurates service between Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and Fort Lauderdale in January.
Beginning Jan. 9 with a flight from Fort Lauderdale to D/FW and extending through Jan. 31, the airline is offering travel to and from D/FW and nine destinations in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean at a fare that is equal to the date of travel.
For example, a flight from D/FW to Kingston, Jamaica, that departs on Jan. 14 costs $14 and a return flight on Jan. 19 costs $19, for a roundtrip fare of $33. Additional taxes and fees apply. All flights connect at Fort Lauderdale.
Flights must be booked by 10:59 p.m. Central Time Monday. The fares are available only the airline’s web site, www.spiritair.com .
Spirit said it plans to fly an Airbus A319 configured to seat 138 passengers on its route between D/FW and Fort Lauderdale, said Rebecca Rivera, a spokeswoman. The 15-year-old carrier, the nation’s largest privately owned airline, serves 27 destinations with 125 daily flights.
The destinations included in the January promotion at D/FW are: Fort Lauderdale; Cancun, Mex.; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Nassau, Bahamas; Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Spirit will fly out of DFW’s Terminal E.
Spirit operated a maintenance base for MD-80 aircraft at Fort Worth Meacham Field until it abruptly closed the facility Sept. 23. Spirit said it closed the base because it is moving to a fleet of all Airbus planes.

The sale fares are heavily restricted, to promote new flights to the Caribbean, starting Nov. 10.

Ben Baldanza, president of Miramar-based Spirit, said that when new flights to leisure destinations are started, a lot of people want to fly the first day in one direction, but don't want to return home in the other direction right away.

"So you end up flying empty," Baldanza said.

The airline picked specific dates to take advantage of that tendency. The fares are selectively available between mid-November and mid-December. They have to be bought online by Nov. 7. Availability differs by flight.

Also, taxes and fees paid to the government are separate and could easily exceed the $18 fare.

Some of the routes offering the $18 fare are Detroit-Kingston, Jamaica and New York (LaGuardia)-Nassau, the Bahamas. In South Florida the routes include Fort Lauderdale-Orlando and West Palm Beach-Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic.

Baldanza said the sale involves several thousand seats. "We don't make money on it directly," he said. But the ultra-cheap price gets people talking about Spirit. "I'm going to have thousands of people saying that they got a $9 fare to Jamaica," he said.

The sale also puts new names in the company's database for e-mail marketing campaigns for its more routine SyberSpecial sales.

Baldanza said Spirit's Web site has been swamped with traffic since the sale was unveiled midday Monday, but that only about 15 percent of the fare seats have been sold. "We intend to sell a lot of these," he said.

That's even more stupid that stupidfares....I mean simplifares. I think its time the gov't needs to step in and tell theses airlines that if they want a tax break to stop charging assanine prices! It costs more to cross the Holland tunnel than a ticket to the carribean...
