Southern Air?

Anyone know anything about them? The usual, pay, schedule, etc.. I've done searches, and can't find much.

I was offered a job with them over three years ago. I was interviewed over the phone by the chief pilot after sending them the standard resume and cover letter. It was the easiest job offer I ever received, but I shortly afterwards declined their offer due to a subsequent job offer with jetBlue about one week later. At the time the airline had four B747s flying cargo routes from mostly LA and Miami to HKG, South America, and Europe. After 9/11 things turned pretty bleak for them and they filed BK about two years ago. They ended up dumping half of their fleet and furloughing a large number of pilots in the process. I believe they are still flying, but only as a shadow of its former operation. Hope this helps.

they are recalling all the crews and are to expand, fun place to work, but low pay, gone 18 day's a month. Great hotels for layovers.

Good for Atlas Furloughees

I'll bet they get plenty of resumes from pilots with a 747 type. Now many did Atlas furlough, 40? I hope those guys find jobs quickly.

I took a look at the employment offer package they sent me and here's what it showed for pay rates back in 2000/2001. This was based on 60hr/month min guarantee

YR1 YR5 YR10

CAPT 77/hr 111/hr 135/hr


F/O 54/hr 72/hr 83/hr


In Training you'd receive $48/day per diem. This is also the daily per diem for both domestic and international trips.

They provided insurance (medical, life, dental) and a 401K plan.

Scheduled days off per month (regular & reserve):

minimum 10 days off for 30-day months
minimum 11 days off for 31-day months

Training was accomplished in Miami at the Pan Am Flight Academy and scheduled to last 7 to 8 weeks.

Again my disclaimer on all this is this information is over three years old and prior to going through a BK process.

I would have loved the chance to fly the B747! My only regret.

I guess that "370K" number is tripping up more folks than I realized.

FOR THE RECORD the 370K represents my total time since I was born, as SATCFI pointed out. My actual flying time is about 1.5% of that total.

Talked to a Southern Air crew on the tarmac at Kuwait Intl in late July 03.

Crew said they're on the road 18 days a month, one trip. They had spent 2 days in Frankfurt, GE, then thru Kuwait to Fujairah, UAE. Were to spend 3 days in UAE, then back thru Germany. Running a lot of military contract cargo right now.

All three had flown with Southern since it had C-130's (L-100's ?) They said they liked the company and the people. I think they said bases were JFK, MIA, and OAK (but I may be mistaken about OAK).

They were in a plain white, unmarked 747. The jet was, at the time, Southern's only airplane. They said they had 4, but there was a problem with the lease, so they had to return 3 temporarily 'till they worked out the leasing. Expected to get more over the coming months/year.

Don't know if they're hiring now, but at the time, they said they were recalling from their furlough list. Sounded like they'd be hiring as they added airframes. The 3rd crewmember was a PFE, and he said they had enough PFEs that pilots weren't having to sit panel.

That plain white 747 got run over and paid for by the Air Force in Ramstein. It seems that a C-5 wing clipped the 747 tail.

All bottom feeders schedule alike. You'll do 18 out straight, and more if you let them. All the bottom feeders are running the same Air Force stuff from Ramstein to Kuwait, and sometimes Bishkek. I don't know where SA stays in Ramstein, so I can't attest to their accomodations.

I do know that this last spring, all they were doing was flowers from South America. However, they got into the military charter. There is a lot of work out there for a company with a good marketing department.

I was employed by Southern Air, formerly Southern Air Transport, formerly Air America from Jan 1998 to Oct 1998.
They went bankrupt while I was in a holding pattern over Stanstead, UK.
They are a good bunch of folks to fly with, pay sucks, especially during training and management is weak.
I was flying the JKF, ANC,NRT run when I was there. My last trip was the European/Africa run.

Lynden is an outfit up from ANC - they actually have those -130's flying worldwide.

When I flew with SAT, (89-91) we had the highest time herk around. If I remember correctly it had 79,000 hrs. N908ST I think. Still was the most fun flying I have ever done. ALL over the world. Pay was pretty good though you were gone alot depending on if you had a US line or flew AD-HOC.
