Hey Guys

IF you want to go to a great place to get your flight education, i 100% recommend Southeastern Oklahoma State University. It is a great four year program, and its the cheapest 4 year program in the states. Check out their web site www.sosu.edu

Its at the same level as ERAU in Daytona and Perdue.

The preceding message was brought to you by FUCU, the Federation of Unknown Colleges & Universities.

Drove 800 miles out of my way to tour that school back when I was doing that. The place was so dirty and run-down looking that I didn't even bother to get out of the car to ask for a campus tour.

Also, it is out in the middle of absolutely NO WHERE. That place makes Grand Forks look like downtown New York City.

Southeast Oklahoma State U.

The place has been around forever and does have good program. I flew several years ago with a gal who attended its aviation program. She had not flown for several years, but I could tell right away that she had received good training because it took her no time to get back in shape. In fact, this experience prompted me to think about instructing at an aviation college because I was so impressed with this pilot's training.

Agreed

I graduated from there in 2002, GREAT PROGRAM! The link to the aerospace department is http://aviation.sosu.edu, and I would highly recommend it. The little town in SE Oklahoma dosen't have much to do, but its amazing what a bunch of college guys and gals can find with no entertainment around. It is truly one of the best programs, both in quality and price, that exist today!

hey guys,

i just wanted to make a point, yes i do agree that the town in not a very diverse place BUT i feel its a good place to study and be focus and get a 4 year degree fast. IT is a very old program and NASA donated a Foxxer-F27 to the college. They have there own planes, their own airport. Going to college is not about just have a big party but rather get a good quality education. It is a VERY inexpensive program.
They are the best aviation program in the mid-west. Do your research and you will find out. It was ranked number 1 regional university in Oklahoma.

SOSU Alumni?

How many SOSU Alumni's keep up with this webboard? Just something I am curious about. If your an alumni, pipe up with what your doing now...

Graduated from SEOSU in 98', but not with an aviation degree. Just started working on my private a couple of months ago. If I had known then what I know now, I would have went that route.

Just my opinion

I'm sure it's a great school, but you couldn't pay me enough to move to SE Oklahoma. I could not live some place where it gets 110 degrees in the summer and there is absolutely nothing to do. I applied to UND (one of the most prestigious "aviation" colleges in the US) but decided not to go there because of the bad location. If you like brutal heat and and mind-numbing boredom, then SE Oklahoma State may be the place for you.

Western Michigan, St. Cloud State, Purdue, and Embry-Riddle (if you're into beaches and hot weather) are top "aviation" colleges in great places.

Ironically, Deadrat treated me really well. Not far from Dallas for the nightlife and ya didn't have to deal with all the city crap on an everyday basis

Good luck with the private, and I wish that foresight was just as 20/20 as hindsight...

If you're going to go to SE OSU, go to OU. We've got a flight school thats at least equal and much more to do in Norman/Oklahoma City, than in Durant, Oklahoma.

to be honest Oklahoma State has the best out of all three. about 26 airplanes all kept up well with three twins. i visited both OU and SEOSU programs and they don't even campare in the least bit to OSU. just a suggestion. plus down in SEOSU you won't stumble upon a decent looking girl anywhere. OSU is loaded in that department

I wouldn't recommend getting a degree in aviation in this climate. Get your degree in something practical and fly on the side. An aviation degree means little if anything to the airlines, only your ratings and experience are important.

Actually I hear Stoolwater has lots of decent looking sheep to choose from!!!

OU 41
OSU 21

BOOMER SOONER!

Most of my friends with to Okla. State. I spend time up there. There are some good looking ladies, but from walking around OU's campus, there are alot more down here.

In addition, OU is getting a brand new fleet of Warriors this January along with refurbishing one of its Senecas and possibly replacing its other Seneca with a Baron.

Good game today! OSU took advantage of OU's (numerous) screw-ups and stayed in the game - had me just a little nervous.

As far as good-looking girls, check out Playboy's Girls of the Big XII issue (haven't seen a new one for awhile). OU's diffenitely has OSU beat, but CU wins hands down - they didn't put any of the hairy hippie-chicks in the issue!

As far as picking a college I would make these my priorities:
1. Price/value - go to a good in-state school
2. Academics - especially in your choosen field (not aviation!)
3. Decent flight school - either on campus (for elective credits) or nearby
4. Girls/booze - college should be a good time, don't ruin it by going to an all-male school like ERAU!
5. Campus and facilities

I wanted to say that OSU and OU are good aviation programs. But the fact is that SOSU far exceeds those two other schools. First all the professors and even the heard of the aviation program at sosu departed OSU. The professors at SOSU stated that OSU and OU think aviation is vocational training and that it should not even be a aviation degree program. All the professors at OSU left that college and felt like SOSU was a place where aviation will grow. Dr.Conway has made the program at SOSU a top notch program.

If you guys do all your research you will realize that overall for the price, quality of education and one one one training with the professors, SOSU is the best choice.

Hey, thanks for the response.

I just wanted to clarify the statement you made above. Is it saying that OU and OSU believe aviation is vocational training?

Or

Is it saying that the professors at SOSU believe aviation programs at OU and OSU are vocational training?

Jon

at OSU the president stated that being a pilot is just a vocational trade and that OSU should not even offer a degree in Aviation. Many of the professors at OSU did not agree with what the president had to say. So they left and went to SOSU.

The president at SOSU feels the opposite. HE feels that aviation is a growing field and if you want to be a professional pilot, SOSU will offer you the best education and training and 100% believes that a degree is totally required in this 21 century.

IF you want to be a average pilot go to a FBO and get your rating but if you want to become a real professional, than SOSU is the place to be. TRUST me, people who graduate from the aviation program at SOSU are really good pilots. They think outside the box, they are more open minded and have more confident in their flying ability.

SOSU almost got a co-op with southwest Airlines. The chief pilot at southwest is a SOSU grad, the flight ops director at Continental AIrlines is a female SOSU grad. Their are a lot of American Airlines pilot that attended SOSU. SOSU has one of the oldest aviation programs compared to OSU or OU. Why would NASA give as a donation a FOXXER F27, why was not OU or OSU offered the F27. Why does SOSU have a program with the US Airforce.

I am not against OSU or OU or any other aviation university, but I am just saying SOSU for the cost and quality of training and wonderful professors, it is a great place to be. Their are so many out of state students at SOSU. It is a diverse program.

and believe it or not Dennis Rodman played his college hoops there. I went to school in Tulsa and whenever I flew to Durant those guys were really cool. Even hooked up with a Durant chick that had all her teeth, fingers, and toes but that was a loooooong time ago. Ahhhhh good times.

Rook

well if its good enough for Dennis Rodman then...

Enough of this bitch1n about who has the best school. A school is only as good as the student that attends it. When it comes down to it we all fly the same airplanes, read the same texts, and take the same standardized checkrides. This posts are cracking me up "My school almost got a SWA internship" "NASA gave us a FOXXER" get off the computer and start studying like we all should be doing. RANT COMPLETE

plus everyone knows the only REAL PILOTS come from ERAU

Just one question, are you serious?. I have yet to meet one pilot who was turned away due to them going to a local fbo versus going to a well known and high priced college program. You (the student) will be responsible for your success or failure(s) in this industry, bottom line. You could have done your flight training with St. Peter, don't really matter...

I ain't buying it my friend.

OU has a quality flight program. It is ever growing also. We're getting new aircraft next semester. We also have an internship/bridge program with American Eagle. We send two students per semester. We have students go to several other internships each semester including American Airlines, Northwest Airlines, the FAA, etc... Not saying any other place sucks. Just saying what we have. We've also just started an FMS course.

Hey guys, just wanted to throw in my experience. I graduated from SOSU like many of the posters in here, but wanted to add a little flava.
1) The Fairchild F-227 was not donated by NASA, rather sold to sosu at a cut-rate. I saw it land.
2) Dr. C, while may be a savy businessman, doesn't relate to the students/instructors very well. Can be friendly, but is more worried about the wax on his bimmer or harley. Just my observations.
3) Durant, OK isn't some Shangri-La, but it's (as previously stated) close enough to Dallas, and has really cheap beer(Red Barn). Plus I really could not have standed going any further into oklahoma.
4) The professors and chief instructor are top notch. They'll help you as much as you could possibly want. Sorry, left out the flight instructors, who were equally competant and helpful.
5) If you're looking for sunny beaches with bikini clad women everywhere, go to Lake Texoma;)
If anyone has any more specific questions or whatever, I'll be happy to oblige. Later

Sorry forgot something. Peace, not sure if I know you or not, but you're going a bit overboard. Example: Professionalism, in my experience is not something people are going to learn from their flight instructor. There are very competent, professional pilots from the smallest of FBOs. There are very uncompetent, unprofessional pilots from the biggest so-called professional pilot programs. Anyone can get a "Professional Pilot Degree" but not all of them will truly be professional pilots. Later

I remember Dr. Conway from Stillwater. A nice guy and helpful advisor for myself. Botom line is, go to the school that you can afford. As 350DRIVER said, it doesn't matter where you get the degrees.

Just don't get one from the Sooner school (the absloute definition of cheaters, i.e. land run of '89.) and don't be paying for no job. Keep the profession professional.

I currently go to OSU-Stillwater and liking it a lot so far. I got started flying a little late and only have about 19 hours at the moment, and just got my first Solo Flight out of the way tonight, was a lot of fun. I have a check-ride coming up, take my written, and then a Cross-Country. Im also a member of the Flying Aggies which has been a lot of fun as well. Lots of nice people to meet, especially the SouthWest pilot that came to talk to us.

Congrats to you guy! How's the Aggies and 60OSU doing? I had some good times there. I did my private thru commercial at SWO/OSU and was on the flight team.

As far as SEOSU goes I think it's a good school, I know Dr. Conway. You have a real four seasons, and Lake Texoma and Dallas nearby. Been to Grand Forks in the middle of winter? They give Prozac out to the students. No trees to stop the icy wind and the only flying is in the sims. But it's a good school too, you just pay more - a lot more.

Best wishes to you and happy flying.

It just so happens I stopped in Durant yesterday for fuel, and saw the SOSU facilities. Seemed decent enough, I've certainly seen worse. The airport could use a little weed and grass killer though.

And don't complain about OK wx too much. I'll take the heat over 22 snowy degrees and trying to cram two big guys in Arctic wear into a C152 any day. Water skiing and striper fishing in Texoma aint too bad, I've done both.

As for girls, you guys must go to the wrong bars. I've found plenty of purdy small town cowgirls. You might need to learn to two step and like George Strait tunes though. I'll take slow dancin' any day. :D
