ASA Wins Mexico Routes
Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines won exemptions to carry out Delta's push in the Los Angeles-Mexico market (DAILY, June 7), while Alaska Airlines won an exemption to compete with Delta head-on in the Los Angeles-La Paz market.
The U.S. Transportation Dept. awarded ASA exemptions to serve Culiacan, Hermosillo, La Paz, Loreto, Manzanillo, Mazatlan, Torreon and Zacatecas from Los Angeles, as well as authority to carry Delta's code on ASA's flights. The department deferred award of the Los Angeles-Los Mochis exemption, saying it was waiting for "necessary security clearances."
ASA would use its 50-seat Bombardier CRJ-200s or 70-seat CRJ-700s to fly the nonstop service in the markets year-round.
Alaska already operates service in the Los Angeles-Loreto/ -Manzanillo/ - Mazatlan markets. The exemption for Los Angeles-La Paz will grow the rivalry to three markets. Alaska's service will launch on Oct. 30, with the carrier operating three weekly flights year-round with Boeing 737-400s. ASA's Los Angeles-La Paz service, meanwhile, will launch Dec. 1.
