Punch the Clown?

Maybe it's my sheltered upbringing, but I have never hear that. What does "Punch the Clown" mean. I mean, I always kick the dog across the room when I get home to let him know I care about him, but I have never heard of "Punch the clown". I might "punch the Clown" too, but just don't know I am doing it, but I'm always on the look out for cool new slang, so please reply with due speed.

I'm with Hawker on this. Just precisely what is "Punch the Clown"? Is it synonomous with "Choke the Chicken" or "Spanking your Monkey"? I did learn what "Punch a Grumpy" meant courtesy of that other thread, but this is really new slang to this old truck driver.

I am not sure if you are kidding but just in case, Earnest Gann wrote "Fate is the Hunter," a must read for any professional pilot. It cronicals Gann's career during the infancy of commercial aviation through the early 1950's. It is a must read as it reminds how many have come before us and are not here today, or at press time for that matter. (1953?)

He also wrote the "High and the Mighty." Good ficton read. If you cannot read you can rent the movie with Jonn Wayne as the crusty old "co-pilot."

"Island in the Sky" is also a great Gann book turned movie. I actually think it is much better than "THatM" FWIW.

"Fate" is the greatest book ever. I think it actually starts in the 30s and ends in the 50s but the characters, stories, and experiences ring strangely familiar even today.

Punch the Clown: originally a reference to a children's toy. the clown (or whatever character-- i had heman) was a weighted bottom blow-up punching bag. it was designed to pop back up to a standing position when knocked over. essentially, punching the clown is a useless act which accomplished nothing. often used in reference to menial tasks and bureaucratic corporate jobs. Example:

i do about fifteen minutes of real work everyday, but mostly i just sit around and punch the clown.

Thanks for looking out. Actually, I am sitting around watching NYPD Blue. What a fine show. Reminds me of myself as a youngster, when my Cat like Quickness and Panther like Agility allowed me to outsmart the scales and perps. If they were a collar, I'd dump their phone and then hope one of my fellow workers would do me a solid. If none of that worked out, I would simply use my superior judgement that kept me out of situations requiring use of my superior skills.

I took off from TEB after two hot starts & a starter that wouldn't let go, then the APU caught fire during taxi followed by an A1 bus failure. After takeoff a generator died, followed by it's neighbor, and then the A2 bus. Leveling at 6000 en route to SBJ the left fuel group started pissing JetA just pass the check valve followed by a fresh cup of coffee and a donut in the break room.

After the coffee 'n donut we had a complete hydraulic failure and had to manually extend the gear. All things considered I thought my ILS to 6 to a full stop was pretty good.
