Jerry adds non profitable A/C, increases costs dramatically, declares BK and slashes all the CBA's via the legal system, if you knew how much he hates unions you would be worried. Jerry has plans that are 10 moves into the future, its his game and he holds all the cards. What do you bring to the table? A pilot certificate, and skills to fly A/C that very few airlines want on line. If he does this dirty Frank Lorenzoish deed he may achieve hero status with Smisek and garner some other deals we have no idea about. You(we all are) playing checkers when the game is chess.

Luckily mainline unions also control what Jerry does. In better or more profitable times, scope is often tightened. Add high oil costs, and it makes it even tougher. Good luck to everyone.

Godspeed!

Mainline unions do not control what regional airline presidents and CEO's do.

If it wasn't for CAL scope, JA would have dozens more of 50+ seaters in the CAL system. Up until scope was relaxed and allowed regional jets to fly in mainline livery, none of thee presidents and CEOs had control over flying these RJs for the mainline. This is exactly why there isn't a conflict of interest in ALPA by the way.

Exactly how does ALPA or any union for that matter control what any CEO does? Given the current status quo BK is the joker in the deck. If Jerry decides to close the doors on any of his airlines how will ALPA prevent that? Add high oil and every empty seat on a widebody that isn't filled by an RJ's feed is lost forever. RJs were never meant to replace narrowbody jets, that was a divide and conquer maneuver played by airline CEOs. You took the bait and let the hook be set. I actually blame you for the regional debacle, you allowed it to happen, the very jets you hate so much were the byproduct of your own folly, and every regional pilot has paid for said folly with years of indentured servitude.
So until you can fill every MD80 to at least one seat more than the largest RJ in your paint colors seat capacity, the maddog will be more expensive to operate.
Sorry about the grammar, but the sun is over the yardarm somewhere in the empire so the rum is flowing freely, my thoughts are liquid and I will get a few FI more fI infractions before passing out in the front yard.

Let's also not confuse DAL ALPA with a REAL union.
Any failures of DALPA are due to the shortcomings of their pilot group, via the MEC. Pilots are at fault, due to a lack of intestinal fortitude, they have the dubious honor of being the weak sisters at the labor table.

Does he do this from a black chopper?

There are two things that make that unlikely. His desire to make money and his fiduciary responsibilities.

He's a business man and is driven by money, not emotion.

Nope, but if there was anyone who could pull this type of thing off it is him, all DAL and UAL have to do is offer enough money via contracts extensions or some other imaginable currency/equity exchange. If he does it it will be for a profit, make no mistake. The real question is what is he gonna do, so unless you have a seat on the board, only a few really know. Underestimate your opponent and it will be costly.
