Alaska Airlines 737 evacuated on landing in Seattle

(AP Online Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) SEATAC, Wash._Authorities have evacuated an Alaska Airlines 737 shortly after landing in Seattle because of smoke in the cockpit.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus says evacuation chutes were deployed on the taxiway Thursday and no major injuries were reported. The first officer in the cockpit was treated for smoke inhalation.

Fergus says the pilot of Alaska Flight 529 from Los Angeles reported a potential nose gear problem while approaching Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. But everything appeared OK on a fly-by past the airport control tower. He says the smoke appeared after the plane was on the ground.

The plane was carrying 103 passengers and a crew of five.

Anyone have "the deets"?

Probably due to shoddy maintenance that was outsourced in order to furlough Alaska maintenance so that they could continue to subsidize the publics low airfares: They are now getting what they paid for.......I say charge 'em for oxygen (except ya don't turn it on for smoke it the cabin...but you get my sentement).

Glad no one was seriously hurt.

How many air returns did Alaska do last year when they replaced thier rampers with Menzies? I hope the saving's was worth it to management.

Would you expect anything less from the people who took a perfectly good MD-80 and killed 88 people.....

How many years have you been hidding in your basement, waiting for something to happend so you could bash them, tool.

Not Hiding at all. I am tired of the spin gods.....I call a spade a spade.....That MD accident was created and caused by the same people who still run this circus....It was 100% avoidable, as are all of the bull$hit weird stuff that we deal with every day that we go to work.....So I am not bashing them....Just tired of flying their shoddily maintained airplanes.... I worked here when 261 went swimming and I know what that feels like....To know with 100% certainty that the people that sign your paycheck just intentionally and willfully caused the death of 88 people....Maybe you know how that is too. I dont know and could care less

Thanks for the friendly reminder . Lets put this post to bed..

Actually, it should be required reading/watching. I would like evryone to have a copy of the cvr . It needs to be brought out as evidence of the cost of cost cutting which we have been engaged in again for the last 4 years. Productivity, efficiency, proper use of technology and cost savings all lead to a better stronger airline. Cost cutting (which is what the airgroup does) will lead to another "261" . It will happen. It is just a matter of time

They had a red nose gear light and no main gear indications at all. The cool thing is that the FO went into the cabin to check the landing gear peep hole but could not see the down lock indicators because of how dirty everything was. So much for having a backup system!

This was all before the smoke.

The FO is doing fine by the way.

Landing Gear

I agree. The original post was about the landing gear issue and the smoke in the flight deck.. Then others here have the bright idea to talk about flt 261. Let’s stick to the original post please.

Absolutely disgusting posts above. Offensive actually..

It is disgusting but a good discussion. Mgt cutting corners with Mx and innocent people die.

Offensive, yes. Management is the problem. considering the cost of gas they are probably cutting as many corners as possible.

Guys, I don't know what you're jumping all over tico for. I've heard quite a few AS pilots say exactly the same thing: that the corporate culture that brought about 261 has not changed one iota and if anything has become worse. Hasn't the cost-cutting only accelerated since then, damn the consequences? The Ka$her award and subsequent war on pilots, firing the rampers & replacing them with menzies, greatly increased mx outsourcing, etc. Does it mean nothing that the FAA found a bunch of unlubricated jackscrews on MD80s coming out of heavy mx as recently as 2006? Now, tico linking all this to the most recent incident with the gear problem & smoke is perhaps premature as we don't know whether shoddy mx played a part yet - even well-maintained airplanes break in unpredictable ways. However, his assertions about the current corporate culture's link to the one that brought down 261 is IMHO absolutely correct.

Exactly, kind of like southwest and their lack of maint. on their 737's. Wait to see how much the lawsuits cost them, let alone the $10million fine!

You see, we can agree. Its the same thing southwest is doing. Cutting corners to save money. Flying airplanes around without inspections, that have cracks. I'm surprised that their "handshake" agreement with the FAA wasn't revealed earlier.
Disgusting!
Makes you wonder what else southwest is hiding!

You are uneducated about the inspection issue. Before you blow "facts" and make yourself look stupid, you really should consider learning the truth.

Turning a thread about Alaska into a bash on SWA...good work, jacka$$.

HEY MOOKIE!!! Stop smoking that BC bud in the cockpit!!! And the crank you pull to get the gear down is not the one between your legs!!!! Anyway, glad the FO and all the pax are well.....and that it wasn't you!!! I still remember pulling into the gate at Seatac shortly after the alaska crash and seeing one of the rampers crying. She had some friends on that plane. What an awful day. Everytime I walk around my mad dog I wonder whats going on under all that metal. Oh well, just drink more beer, it makes everything better.

Being stupid has never stopped you from posting snoopy!

Just stating the obvious! Sorry the truth hurts so much. I'm just wondering what else southwest is hiding, besides cracked airplanes!

I flew the -400 yesterday from PDX to SNA and there was a MX guy with squirt bottle in hand cleaning the mirrors for the gear peephole. I think Tico is right on track. BTW - How'd you guys like the letter from B.A that came in the mail saying how we are going into recession and we should be happy we have jobs? Go 2010!!......Or is it the 2110 plan?? One more day of Retro Pay!!

Baja.

more evidence of an imbalance in your brain chemistry. Thanks for making it easy for me.

Please show me the way twepilot. You must be a OT Level III (at least) at the Scientology church. Help me and free me from the evil alien thetans! Only you have this power.

On a serious note, if what Tico and others have posted here really disturbs you, then you need to grow a pair and realize the amount of damage to your job security and familiy that could be caused by poor management oversight of maintenance and cutting corners in the maintenance process. One hull crash could cost you your job or even more importantly..your life.

You outta be digusted by the recent MX problems from SWA, AMR and others.

you seem to know alot about Scientology...hmmm...Your not Travolta's whipping boy are you?? Come on you can tell its ok...I, on the other hand haven't a clue about it.

nice try..thanks for playing

Back to the original topic. I was told by a mechanic that there were two circuit breakers right next to each other that were popped in the cockpit of the smokey plane. He said they were in a location that can easily be accidentally pulled out by a pilot-he wasn't implying the pilot accidentally did it-and that one of the breakers would have shut off the fans in the packs and that could have caused the packs to overheat and smoke. The other breaker was a flight/ground sensor breaker. Other than that, they could not find anything else wrong with the airplane.

Don't shoot the mesenger (me) I'm just telling you what I was told.

Flew a 900 the other day and the landing gear config. horn started going off leveling at 9,000ft just after departing LA. Lasted for about 30-40 seconds then went away. Mechanic said it's a common problem in the PSEU. Happens all the time. Maybe but it's the first time I've heard of it.
