Dude, the checkairman in the left seat let the new F.O. basically crash the airplane onto the ruway in RAP after starting the approach when it was below mins. He's lucky. The ASAP program let him stay a pilot even though the FAA was out for blood and wanted all his certificates. Trust me.

The way I justify my career at SkyWest is like this. I work for the best company in a very crappy industry. They don't have to improve conditions, in fact they can't or they will be priced out of the market. THE WHOLE INDUSTRY HAS TO IMPROVE, which is not gonna happen. So the moral is don't let your kids grow up to be regional airline pilots.

I know the check airmen involved. If the allegations you say were true, he wouldn't be flying the line today. Don't believe me, check the bids for Oct and you will see his name there. I hear that same story from others who don't know the man and what happened. True, he let a FO fly an approach to mins. Is that prohibited anywhere? I flew approaches to mins many times, you probably too as a FO. As it stands, the FO is the one who flys cat II approaches in the RJ, including ones potentially single engine to a missed. How is PSP these days?

Didn't know RAP was a CAT II approach. Do know the Captain lands the plane at the end of a CAT II approach, not the FO. Why isn't he a checkairman any more? Not trying to fight, just defend the ASAP program when the FAA wanted to ground him and the program saved his bacon.
I hear PSP is alway hot this time of year.

That check-airman was the victim of (IMHO) a FSDO employee who was out to get someone...check the facts...and be careful what you say before you do. He's one of the best at SkyWest... Find out who he is and ask him his side of the story, its a good story...

Correct me if I am wrong but at an ASAP hearing a "FSDO employee who was out to get someone" is not even present. Just the pilot rep, company rep, and the FAA guy. The FAA guy has the accident/incident report in front of him and it's up to him as to what will or will not happen to the pilot. This is how we avoid the "FSDO employee who was out to get someone" from being directly involved. Yes things are not as clear as they may seem here, but something bad did happen that night during that CAT I approach and we are luckly no one was hurt.

There is no Cat II approach to RAP. You seemed concerned that a FO was flying an ILS to mins, simply wanted to let you know that a FO flys cat II approach and subsequent missed (one or two engine) on the jet. Your profile indicates you are on the bro and perhaps were not aware of that.
Yes something bad did happen that night, and yes they were lucky.
The man who had to face the music used the ASAP program and was underwhelmed by it. You infer you know him, or I should say if you are typing this much about him you better know him and be familiar with that night to say what you have. Ask him personally what he thinks of ASAP. He has no problem talking about it to others, so ask him about the incident and his beliefs about the program.
Much the same as other wing tip strikes before ASAP, little was done to the PIC by the feds. The FO 20 Kt x wind limit is a result of one strike I am aware of, but nothing was done to the PIC as he was not violation of any FAR's or company SOP. Careless/reckless does not apply.

Company check airman is not a certificate, it's a letter of authorization from the FAA. ASAP protects certificates not letters. There was no certificate action against this pilot, just a revocation of authorization.

Too bad for us. He is a great pilot and was a good check airman. It just goes to show me that bad things can happen to anyone. Be vigilant.....

Guys, chill out. I'm not attacking the PIC. A comment was made earlier about how the ASAP program didn't help the PIC in the RAP incident. Looking at the NTSB report and knowing that a "FSDO employee who was out to get someone" was involved, the ASAP program protected the PIC to a point. Yes he's a great guy and yes they took his letter for a year. But what happened that night was enough to cause "some" concern for the Feds. He may not be satisfied or agree with the ASAP outcome but ask the others who have benefited from the program what they think and then build your opinion of the program. The program is worth it even if it doesn’t always give us the result we’d like.

One of the reasons I'm not hanging my head too low as of late is because according to our latest SAPA updates, MGMT has agreed to a pay INCREASE, work on the 50/70 split with a variable blended rate based on fleet size, and a new bonus program based on your earnings with a lower trigger.


Policy manual details are generally bending inthe direction of management, and this needs to be worked on, but getting more money while others around you are in the process of give backs, and taking on many jets with the associated movement and upgrades is, to me, a good thing.

Other personal QOL things are subjective. I live in my domicile and am generally satisifed with my bid position in domicile. If I chose to live elsewhere, well, commuting sucks. Thats why I won't do it.

No new deliveries, stuck in the right seat for the forseeable future. You are the posterboy for what is wrong in the regional pilot, one phrase-"Kool-Aid drinking, Quisling" says it all.
Bitter? not me I am senior to you and have already got mine, I am concerned/aware for the newhires/newguys futures. Enjoy living in your domicile, until it closes and you become a commuter, and start living the dream. 2 leg commute to reserve(or ready). Rumor floating around, SFO/LAX domiciles, with closure of all the small domiciles.

That's because for the most part we are ok with where we are at this point.

Granted some regionals have it worse, but some also have it better. I thought SkyWest considered itself amongst the best and would expect to be treated (read pay/work rules) as such.

As far as I can tell, no one at OO has gotten a raise in several years (unless you upgraded or transitioned). And historic credit values have declined. Forget inflation, I hear people are making less money in real dollars than they were in years past. Corporate profits seems to be doing OK though; record breaking if I remember correctly.

Don't get me wrong, I think SkyWest is a wonderful company. Just wondering how much the pilots are going to take before they say enough is enough. It's not like they haven't given alot already.
