New hire pay begins at the completion of SIM and aircraft checkout at regular reserve guarantee of 75 hours per month at $19.02 per hour.

Hotel is paid for, though they assign two newhires per suite. If you choose to have your own room, SkyWest will pay for half.

Later, for transition and upgrade, you get your own room and are paid 4 hours of you most current rate per day and $1.60 per hour per diem 24/7 throughout training. Your new pay rate applies after SIM check and airplane checkout.

What the heck are you talking about? PFT? No way, at no point do you see new hires paying to sit in the brasilia. In fact, SKYW is still considered one of thee best in the industry in training hands down.

I was lucky and was hired during a time when the company paid you while in training, 65 hours/mo at $19.02/hr. The paycheck was about $350 for two weeks. So, current newhires give up about $1000 during training. It sucks, but the company is spending about $20-30K to train you and you have no obligation to stay. It's really nothing like PFT.

ExpressJet has nearly the same thing. They give you a check for $1460, pay for your hotel, give you breakfast every morning, and don't have any kind of training contract. Pretty similar to Skywest, and beats the he!! out of places like Pinnacle or TransStates.

Isn't $1460 about right for beginning FO pay at a lot of regionas? I think thats actually a lot higher than places like Lakes and Mesa? Whats the average paycheck, once trained at SKW, on a monthly basis?

Sure it is. Skywest is taking advantage of the current glut of wannabes. It's not to the level of requiring you to write them a check to work there but it's heading that direction. I'm sure that policy eliminates many good pilots that have financial responsibilities that require them to earn a paycheck for that period of time.

How soon you two guys forget that during the '90s, ASA hired only through the FlightSafety New Hire program. Now THAT was PFT....yep, you gotta love ALPA!

I'm a pack rat, save all sorts of old aviation-related stuff...so I still have my job-search info from many years ago. I even saved a few FlightSafety brochures (I requested them to see who NOT to send resumes to anymore). Let's see what airlines are on those lists, shall we?

May 1993 issue: ASA, Air Vantage, Air LA, Air Vegas, Atlantic Coast, Chicago Express, Business Express, Chautauqua, Commutair, Express Airlines I, GP Express, Jetstream Intl, Lone Star, Northeast Express, Pakwest (Metroliners?), and Trans States. Continental Express used FSI during the '90s as well, but they're not listed on the May '93 or Jan '94 brochures. Of course we all remember that Comair hired through its own school in Orlando.

I see several ALPA carriers listed there...yep, gotta love'em. And these days it seems like a few pilots from some of those carriers are the ones who whine and complain the most...you know, things like 'raising the bar' and all. Rather ironic, I think.

SkyWest has never required a pilot to pay for training; that's why I hammered them with resumes, along with Air Whisky, Mesaba, Horizon, WestAir, Allegheny, Henson, and anyone else that didn't require you to buy the job.

I agree that it sucks that SkyWest doesn't pay new hires while in training. It's embarrassing. But in no way is it a form of PFT. Cripes, I always told myself to not jump into a PFT argument.

Last time I checked, ALPA doesn't own an airline. So how are they going to tell one who and how to hire?

Probation periods are there for a reason when it comes to a new hire, it protects the company and the labor group.

The ALPA reference was directed at the previous ASA guy who made it sound like ALPA was responsible for them getting paid during training. I completely understand that ALPA has no say in how airlines hire. I was being sarcastic, but apparently you didn't get it. As an example, I started this post with even more sarcasm. Also, who said anything about probation periods?

By the way, I have no desire to fly the 70, and I won't do it anytime soon. And I don't drink the kool-aid...I was one of the 478 who voted for a union.

When I went through training at COEX, I got that 1460 for the entire span of training from first day of class to sim-ride when I became a "real employee". So, the answer is no...because my training took a little bit longer than 4 weeks. I am not saying CoEx isn't doing bit better...but it is only a bit. I had a roommate during training at CoEx...I had a roommate during training at SkyWest(and at least SkyWest provided us with a two-room suite). Got a little more money at CoEx...Got furloughed. Working at SkyWest...made to second year pay and have enough cash to pay off lots of debt. That was only my personal situation, though.

That is true for me, yes...looking to be on par to make about mid-30's this year(my second year).

Oh, yeah, that 1600 was TAKE HOME...but for now, I am still looking at taking home about 30K this year...sorry for the confusion.

almost every month I have been on reserve I have broken guarantee(75 hrs)...and broken it big. I can hold a line now and choose to continue to bid reserve for days off...however... So, yeah, I am making a decent wage(IMHO). Later...

When I interviewed at SkyWest a while back (before they changed their policy) they told me I would be paid during training and provided a hotel room.

A week before ground school was to start they called and told me I'd no longer be paid and I'd have to share a hotel room or pay for half if I wanted it to myself. Then they gave me some story about cost cutting and the UAL contract.

I politely reminded the caller that I'd already been told otherwise training pay and the hotel at the interview. She basically said too bad. I basically said thanks but no thanks.

We've got to start standing up for the profession and ourselves.
