With Skywest being able to post a profit of over 1 Billion this year, will they become a major airline? Does anyone know what the stipulations are for being given such a title. Would they have to get larger planes?

Rumor was that mgmt took a little trip overseas for?
 
REVENUE of over $1B maybe, but certainly not profit. Profit has been averaging roughly $20M/qtr give or take a few.

St. George , Utah —SkyWest, Inc. (NASDAQ: SKYW) today reported operating revenues of $308.3 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2004 , a 33.7% increase, compared to $230.5 million for the same period last year. The Company also reported net income of $21.3 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2004 , or $0.37 per diluted share, compared to $21.1 million of net income or $0.36 per diluted share for the same period last year.

Regardless of revenue and profits I think most will agree that the common definition of a "Major" airline, for what its worth, must include some aspect of it being on its own. Not only independant in terms of not being wholly owned by some other company, but not existing solely to serve another (or several) code-shares.

Majors are fed, they do not feed other mainline partners.

SkyWest will never become a "Major" unless its hand is forced. Jerry's got too good a thing going with fee-for-departure and a fixed profit. Minimize the risk and go for the stable sure thing (again, whatever that means in the airline world today) has been the name of the game in SGU for some time now...
 
By the Department of Transportation definition, yes that would make you a major. But good luck with that, because it does mean anything. In the eyes of the only group that really matters, the National Mediation Board, you will alway be a regional airline, and be paid like a regional airline.
 
I was talking with some dude from Eagle the other day and he said he was a major airline pilot because Eagle is considered a major...

what a douche.

Skywest must have a real contract with UAL otherwise their flying would be put out for the lowest bidder to pick up.
 
The $1 billion "Major Airline" status is a highly sought after threshold for several reasons. Namely:

1. Boeing and Airbus give immediate 15% discount on all airframe purchases.

2. Most major fuel vendors give 5% kick back to purchasing agents at year end.

3. A slew of other very significant benefits take place.

4. Researchers Masters & Johnson even found a measurable increase in the size of the male phallus once the $1 billion mark was reached.

I think you're responding to claims that haven't been made. Nobody that I see posting is making claims that SkyWest employees will be paid or treated any differently now that annual revenues exceed 1B. They guy that started this thread appears to fly Metros and was merely making an observation. Not sure about your NMB reference since SkyWest is non-union for the time being. Did SkyWest turn you down or something?

That's a bit harsh Benjamin. He simply stated an opinion, that I happen to agree with. No SkyWest didn't turn me down, I'm senior to you.
I was a bear to people when I commuted as well.
 
Major = >1B + airplane over 100 seats.
National = <1B + airplane over 100 seats.
Regional = No airplanes over 100 seats.

Skywest is not a major, nor is eagle.

What does a major mean anymore?

A MAJOR pain in the butt to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. that has to pick up the pieces, because some fool hired too many MBA's who had one good idea and slaps them with a nice bonus while asking for concessions from the 20% who do 80% of the workload?

Because some fool thought that paying out on the balance sheet more than what was being brought in would be good for the time being because things just have to turn around.... Don't they?

By the way who backs the PBGC anyway? Oh yeah the government... Well who backs the government? Oh yeah my tax dollars.... Have fun with your 1040's...
